Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Handman
Hi Lisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first started the harp at a camp that offered harp lessons to children. I knew from the time that I started that this was something I wanted to pursue. Harp teachers were pretty scarce back then, but my Parents found a teacher about a half hour from our house. After that first year, I then attended Manhattan School of Music Preparatory School all during High School. I knew this was going to be my career and after High School, I attended Indiana University and Montclair State University earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with a concentration in harp and a minor in piano. It was difficult in the beginning to make a living as a Musician, so I went back to school and got an M.S. degree in computer science and worked in the corporate world. I still performed and taught private lessons throughout my corporate career and was able to take the plunge back into music full time in 1996. I have never looked back on that decision!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There was a big struggle after college to make a living, so I earned my M.S. degree and worked in the corporate world for several years. I have learned that you have to wear many hats as a Musician to be successful. Teaching, steady gigs, performing private and corporate events are some of those “hats”.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have multiple harps for performances, and my Electric Harp really sets me apart from other Harpists. The Electric Harp has pick-ups on each of the 47 strings and hooks into my own sound system. I can perform for over 1000 people and still be heard! It allows me to perform at all types of events. I also offer performances with a gold harp that is very popular in the South. My Clients are very happy with my services based on reviews and feedback, and I love what I do!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Always pursue your dreams! Being a Musician has been a goal of mine since I was a Child, and sometimes it does not work out the way you planned. It took me awhile to get here, but the wait was worth it.
