Daily Inspiration: Meet Mariah Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Johnson.

Mariah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Mariah, an upcoming makeup artist! I started in my home town Cleveland, OH taking clients, family member, and friends in my father’s dining room and or doing home calls. I struggled with creating what I thought was a successful cliental base for myself, often times believing I couldn’t get to where I wanted to be in the makeup industry.

I relocated to Georgia with my family in 2018, and continued to struggle. I had no friends, no work, and I was far out from the city, resulting in seasonal depression. I returned back home to Ohio in 2020 to be comfortable. And that’s exactly what I was, stuck and cozy. After a year being back home and realizing doors were being shut in my face left and right, When the lockdown came everything was at a stand still, and unfortunately I was not one of those who took advantage of that time to invest and create business plans for myself and the brand I wanted. I knew my time in Cleveland was done. When God says no, the answer is NO! And I was ready to listen!

I moved back to Atlanta, GA in 2021 where I knew that there was ample opportunities for me, and zero distractions! I also had my number one supporter in ATL, Jhalin Knowles! Jhalin is my cousin, best friend, and business partner all in one. When I lose interest, speak negatively of myself, make excuses, or abandon my work and creation, he is always there to not only remind me of my talents but to push me to keep moving forward. Each push he gives is always followed with action, thank you jay!

In ATL, I’ve been blessed with a great book of business, from group photoshoots for clients in the ATL area to being behind the scenes for a few major brands! I am extremely grateful to God for a better second run in Georgia, and I cannot wait to see what he has in store for me in the future in ATL!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I haven’t experienced as many hardships as most entrepreneurs or makeup artists, but that doesn’t eliminate any! The start up in my opinion is the most hardest. It takes courage, believing in yourself, and the funds. I’ve worked many jobs, and it just wasn’t enough to provide for myself and to purchase the equipment and makeup needed. Most don’t understand what it take to get started as a makeup artist; different shades in liquid products, application tools, furniture and a space to do your work, etc.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a makeup artist based in Atlanta, GA. I specialize in soft glam and abstract makeup looks, illuminating the skin and achieving any desired look.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking risks is one of the bravest things one can do! Risks are connected to the unknown. The unknown results, consequences, or wins that will come!

The risk I took in my life was literally channeling my inner self, exposing the kind, funny Mariah publicly along with my work in a new city. It is scary not knowing how the world will receive me, my work, but it’s about being true to myself and trusting that God will carry me and my brand through to where it needs to be to thrive beyond my expectation!
