Daily Inspiration: Meet Mathis Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mathis Art.

Hi Mathis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been obsessed with making art and overall expressing myself since I was 4, But I started my art page on instagram around freshman year old high school but i’ve been sharing my art online since around 5th grade. I was really inspired by pages on instagram like @bluboy, @reenostus, and @kodone. I just kept posting work and getting my art seen by people and as time went on I gained a following and even got in touch with other creatives.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can’t say it’s been a smooth road up and till now but I can’t say I was down bad. Being a creative comes with ups and downs, I didn’t go to college, I banked on being good enough at art that I wouldn’t have to go to college and somewhat i was right, Though there is times where the business and eyes that are on me slow down and I think “am I in the wrong field? am I doing the right type of work? is my niche not as cool as I thought?” These are thoughts we all have as creatives so I try not to let it destroy my process. Not to mention I am kinda lazy at times.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I consider myself a multidisciplinary artist. I’ve worked in pastels, digital, paint, whether it be oil or acrylics, etc. etc.
Though l do find myself more proud and taking more time with my paintings than anything I make digitally.

I’d say I’m more known for my digital work than anything else. All my work for big publications(nike, NFL, Spotify, etc.) was made in digital. I see why though my digital work does pop a bit more, it’s a bit more colorful and diverse.

As for what sets me apart from other artists, i’ll have to get back to you on that. Evidently it’s something whether it be my rugged linework or my habit of giving characters third eyes, because the people who enjoy my work notice it.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Being happy about what you do for a living.
