Today we’d like to introduce you to Maureen Gicharu.

Maureen Gicharu

Hi Maureen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Maureen Gicharu, and my journey began in Nairobi, Kenya, where I grew up in the vibrant community of Mwiki, Kasarani. At the age of 16, armed with two suitcases and an unwavering dream, I embarked on a life-changing journey to the United States. Settling in Kansas City, Missouri, I navigated the challenges of balancing work, education, and supporting my family back home.

My educational journey took root at Johnson County Community College, where I earned my Associate of Liberal Arts. Subsequently, I pursued my passion for nursing, graduating from Park University with an associate degree and later earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at MidAmerica Nazarene. My quest for knowledge culminated in a Master of Science in Nursing from the Research College of Nursing.

During my graduate studies, I had the privilege of receiving the Sigma Theta Tau awards, a recognition that humbly reflects my dedication to excellence in Nursing Academics alongside my peers. Additionally, my research partner and I were honored to be recipients of the Bobbie Scholar Award, a moment that highlights our shared commitment to developing Evidence-based practices for addressing childhood obesity in primary care settings. These achievements, while bringing me a sense of pride, underscore the collaborative spirit and collective efforts within the healthcare community.

Over my 14-year healthcare career, I’ve seamlessly transitioned into homecare settings, driven by a profound commitment to serve and impact lives positively. From my early days as a caregiver and then as a registered nurse to my current role as a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, I’ve amassed a wealth of experience in diverse healthcare settings, including prestigious roles in acute care hospitals and teaching nursing students in clinical settings.

As a proud veteran and currently serving as a Captain in the United States Army Nurse Corp, my military service continues to instill in me invaluable leadership skills and discipline that complement my healthcare career. Looking ahead, I aspire to continue making meaningful contributions to the healthcare landscape, leveraging my unique blend of experiences and skills.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey from the airport at the age of 16 to where I am today has been marked by numerous challenges that tested my problem-solving skills and resilience. It all began with a torn suitcase and my mother’s advice: ‘Figure it out, your parents won’t always be there.’ This early lesson taught me the importance of quick thinking and adaptability.

Transitioning to a foreign country brought a new set of challenges—navigating a different school system, culture, and way of life. Juggling full-time student responsibilities with two jobs was no easy feat. Balancing school fees, exam preparation, and homework was a constant struggle, especially during demanding clinical rotations where I worked 12-hour hospital shifts alongside full-time studies.

Despite the obstacles, I firmly believe in rising above limitations through hard work, focus, mentorship, and unwavering faith. Challenges became stepping stones, propelling me to effect positive change in my community and beyond. My entrepreneurial journey has also had its share of hurdles, but each challenge has fortified my problem-solving mindset.

Throughout this journey, my faith in God has been a cornerstone, providing strength to overcome obstacles. I share my story not just to recount personal triumphs but to inspire others facing challenges. As Maya Angelou wisely said, ‘When you learn, teach; when you get, give.’ I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can inspire others to rise above their obstacles and, in turn, make a meaningful impact on the world
