Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Jarrett.
Hi Maya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It wasn’t until I gave up on a typical 9 to 5 type day, that I tried different forms of art and knew that if I locked in on something I could be financially free. So far it’s lead to me having 4-5 different jobs and trying to maintain the responsibilities I barely sustained with a typical 9 to 5. All I ever wanted to do was find my place in a greater machine but as I climb I fall harder. I want to be of use, not used and honestly, I really struggle to find where I fit into things sometimes. I don’t know where I’m at, nor am I concerned about progress on a greater scale, just a project by project basis. I just want to be around people who are reciprocal in every sense of the word.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Literally. Everything. Starts. With. Self. When I’m not taking care of myself things just explode all around me like it’s not even funny. You gotta be real with how you feel and hold people accountable. When you see something you don’t like about something bro say something or jump ship immediately. It’s not worth the pain, confusion, fear, nothing is worth more than your own health. So in short, no it has not been a smooth road at all. I don’t even know where my road goes, but it can’t be a long one if I’m not doing basic life essentials like getting out of bed when I wake up, staying clean, drinking water, & eating.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am proud of the times that I can remember to tell people all of the great things I can do (when it’s relevant). It’s so easy for me to say that I’m an artist, that I draw and paint, but I can literally do anything and I love to bring reality to my ideas and others’. I’ve been doing production work for 3 years now, and in between time I can say I’ve grown so much as far as expressing myself verbally and through my art. Like I mentioned earlier, I was casually exploring different mediums of art, like painting more, making clothes, using resin, video editing, taking more pictures (and being in them) but as I made my way through production, I was able to pick a few things to lock in on and properly introduce myself as more than an artist. I am a visionary, a bit naive at times, an overachiever, sensitive, a designer, a creator.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
To be honest, it’s not much I wish I knew, just that I listened more carefully to those that I know love me and have my best interest at heart. Don’t take things so personal, learn how to address and talk about your emotions before being quick to react. Learn how to platonically date your friends and get to know someone before exploring bodily desires. Really learn to love and take care of yourself in ways that work for you so you can demand that from those you keep around.
