Today we’d like to introduce you to Myrtle Means.
Myrtle , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Dr. Means grew up on the east side of Detroit in a place of violence, poverty, and limited education. She was determined to get out and education was her road map. Myrtle C. Means, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist practicing in the Metro Detroit and Atlanta area. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Michigan State University and University of Detroit Mercy, respectively. Dr. Myrtle Means is an AASECT certified sex therapist. She has taught at the University of Detroit Mercy and Michigan School of Psychology where she taught psychology and human sexuality courses.
Dr. Means has been practicing for over twenty-five years. In her private practice, she provides service to a diverse population, treating diagnoses such as mood disorders, personality disorders, and PTSD (including survivors of sexual abuse).
Dr. Means specializes in human sexuality and believes, “Throughout our lifetime we all will struggle with aspects of sexuality: from the man who struggles with controlling his ejaculatory response to the postmenopausal woman who struggles with arousal. I want to make these struggles more palatable and assist in finding a personal answer to these very personal quandaries. The Recipe for Ecstasy is just the beginning of our long-term relationship”. She has written two titles in The Recipe for Ecstasy series including – The Recipe for Ecstasy What Women Want: Sexual and Relationship Satisfaction and The Recipe for Ecstasy The Couples’ Guide to Intimacy and Pleasure. Dr. Means is currently writing books on Neurodivergence and the intersections with intimacy and pleasure.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was born to a teenage mom. Once my mom married there was violence and substance abuse all around. As a African American woman, I have encountered racism and sexism along the way. Often being overlooked and misunderstood. I remember being called “nigger”, “porch monkey”. I remember being asked if I had a learning disability, in graduated school, after graduating from MSU with honors.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
