Today we’d like to introduce you to Naosha Gregg.
Hi Naosha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a little girl my mom took me to 42nd street and I remember staring up at The New York Times building, completely in awe, and knew that I wanted to be a journalist one day. Fast forward to now, I hold a B.S. in Journalism & Media Studies and have worked with some of the largest companies including SiriusXM radio and, drumroll, The New York Times.
I went into journalism because I saw so many things and people that needed their stories told and didn’t have a voice, and I wanted to be the one to provide that for them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While I was very blessed and privileged to have a loving family, attend the best schools and have a strong support system, I really struggled with confidence. In fact, to this day I still struggle with confidence. I used to rely on others to believe in me, to seek their validation, but I came to realize that the only person I need to believe in me, is me. Building up the confidence to pitch magazines and outlets, to apply for jobs where I may be missing 1 or 2 requirements was difficult. But it was after a former manager of mine told me that my writing needed some work, that I was published two months later in one of the largest magazines in the country, that I realized I’m the CEO of my life and I’m in charge. As long as I believe in myself, that’s all I need.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently a Broadcast Associate at CBS Mornings and a beauty freelance writer. My work has appeared in Glamour, Byrdie, Thrillist and Her Campus.
How do you think about luck?
While I do believe in luck, when it comes to my career I truly believe it was being at the right places at the right times, and being persistent and fearless. I scored my first internship by sending a recruiter an email when the hiring season was done. When I fell in love with makeup, I practiced application and creating social content when I got home from my 9 to 5, despite being exhausted. In this industry, it’s also about who you know, not what you know, and I always live by the motto: Treat people kind because you might be entertaining an angel unaware.
