Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Stovall.
Hi Nichole , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve loved photography forever. I remember checking out the digital camera from my high school video production teacher to take photos. A few years later for Christmas my now husband gifted me a Kodak digital camera and in one of the boxes- an engagement ring was hiding.
I never pursued photography professionally until roughly 2017. I had been managing a boutique and taking photos for social media when I realized I really wanted to jump back in. Fast forward to another Christmas and another camera from my husband-this time a professional Nikon camera and a couple of lenses. I posted a model call as soon as I figured out the settings.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Trying to start from the ground up is a major challenge. You have to have the pedal to the metal 24/7. Photography is so competitive-one post on a public social media platform requesting a photographer might have 200+ comments in less than an hour. Marketing using the current trends can be a challenge too-reels and tik toks are the best way to gain traction but that’s difficult with a still frame.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I own and operate a photography business specializing in weddings, engagements and couples.
What I strive for goes beyond just a point and click. Something that I love is building these relationships that I see all the seasons of your life. I have clients that I’ve done their grad photos, their engagement and then their wedding. I have clients that I’ve watched their families grow-from maternity photos to chasing a toddler. I’ve been heartbroken with clients while they bring me their 14 year old family pet for one last session.
I think what sets me apart is that we don’t just sign a contract and snap a photo. I have these amazing relationships with my clients. I will steam your wedding dress if you need it. I will hike down a mountain so you get that perfect waterfall photo. We will laugh and cry together.
Something wildly important to me and something I am incredibly proud of is the inclusion my company offers. I am a proud ally and in a world of so much uncertainty, particularly with the lgbtqia+ community, I take great pride in being a company that you can be yourself with.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just do the thing! Take the photo, take all the photos! Good, bad, just start clicking!
Everyone is going to have an opinion, don’t get discouraged. Practice, practice, practice. Take photos in all kinds of different lighting.
