Today, we’d like to introduce you to Oliver Adams.
Hi Oliver, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I grew up as a salon baby! My father, James Adams, was a hairstylist and a salon owner for the majority of my life. So I grew up with him tagging me and my sister to hair shows and hair events as kids. He was one of the original members of the first All-Black team of Platform Artists for Clairol Professional.
When I was a Junior in college, I figured out fairly quickly that I wanted to work for myself so I then decided that once I got my degree, I was going to enroll in beauty school and work with my dad. That’s how it all started.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been peaches and cream, but I’m so thankful for the decision I made to follow my heart and business savvy into the world of cosmetology and the business of being in the salon industry.
It’s awarded me an amazing lifestyle and has taken me all over the world sharing my love and passion for hair and hair color. I wouldn’t take a single struggle back. It’s what made me who I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m affectionately known as the “Kolor King.” In this industry. I am a full-time Colorist and Natural Bair Specialist, an international educator, and a Top Artist for Wella as well as the lead educator for an emerging new beauty tech company called Myavana!! I run the color department for a historic salon in Atlanta called Too Groovy.
TG has been an anchor in the natural hair community for over 20 years, and it’s been a privilege and an honor to connect with so many amazing stylists and clients in the city. I just moved back to Atlanta from Las Vegas.
I owned a salon in Las Vegas from 2020-2023… while also running and operating a salon, a barbershop, and over 25 salon suites that I rented to premiere stylists throughout Atlanta. So I definitely keep myself busy. I’m also a proud dad to one teen daughter and two young sons.
What makes you happy?
Family and being successful in this industry are two things that really make me happy.
It’s been rewarding to see that gambling on myself and putting the work in to be great has sustained a great life and lifestyle for myself and those around me. I find joy in creating beautiful hair colors for my clients and allowing them to feel beautiful and full of life! It’s an amazing feeling.
