Today we’d like to introduce you to Phoenix Broom.
Hi Phoenix, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey into photography in 2018 unexpectedly. I bought a camera with the intent to create short films and eventually produce movies. I soon became obsessed with the fundamentals of creating a beautiful photograph. I began to study lighting, balance, composition, and the use of space to capture my vision and interpretation of beauty artfully.
I fully immersed myself in photography in college where I shot album covers for upcoming artists and ecommerce photoshoots for upcoming fashion designers. These opportunities assisted in developing my photography style of editorial fashion and portrait photography. This also fed my mission to always help and give back to the community using my gifts and passions.
One of the most unforgettable shoots to date is when I walked out of the dining hall and I saw a girl that had a very unique look. I had to ask her to do a shoot. She agreed and soon later told me that she was so embarrassed because this was the first time she dressed like this and she felt so many people staring and giggling. She actually was on her way back to the dorms to change her outfit. So for me to ask her to shoot came as a shock. The moral of the story is that your beauty may not be recognizable to everyone but someone will see you and think you’re the most beautiful thing in the world! This is one of the many reasons I love photography. Throughout my journey, I receive the highest amount of joy when people who don’t believe they are photogenic leave my photoshoots with a greater sense of confidence.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Photography definitely made me very familiar with rejection, cancellations and dead-in inquiries. At first, this was a struggle that weighed very heavily on me but I began to realize that these things might seem like failure but they are just bringing you one step closer to success. Despite photography being a tough business to succeed in, deciding on a career in photography was the easiest choice I have ever made when I decided to walk on faith, quit my job and pursue photography full-time. I never looked back.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The Covid-19 crisis had taught me a bunch and I’ve had a lot of epiphanies. I’ve realized that life is too short to not go after your dreams. Therefore, I decided to put more effort into my creative thoughts and entrepreneurship journey. Along that journey, the lessons I have learned are to be proactive and make sure every day you do something that is going to benefit your business. Otherwise, you are wasting precious time that is not guaranteed. Covid-19 also showed me how important the arts are for the community because it brings us together in such a profound way. We gather together for artful events such as concerts, poetry slams, ballets, museums and etc. but don’t realize how dull life would be without it. I’ve learned not to take art for granted and to find ways to create and share my art with the community as well as support other artists.
