Daily Inspiration: Meet Rakeeda ( Honidip) Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rakeeda ( Honidip) Austin.

Hi Rakeeda ( Honidip), please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my skincare and massage candle business at 24 years old while on maternity leave with my second daughter. That season of my life slowed me down just enough to reflect on where I had been—and where I wanted to go. I wanted to build something meaningful, not just for income, but for healing.

Growing up in the foster care system and surviving an abusive relationship in high school shaped me in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time. I learned early how important comfort, safety, and self-care are when life feels unstable. Skincare and massage candles became my way of creating moments of peace—something I didn’t always have but deeply needed.

What started as making products for myself during late nights with a newborn quickly turned into a purpose-driven business. Every product I create is rooted in resilience, self-love, and the belief that everyone deserves to feel cared for—inside and out.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running my business hasn’t been easy. There were times when every dollar I had went toward inventory, leaving little to cover regular bills. I faced moments of real uncertainty, questioning how I would make it through the next month. Still, I chose to keep moving forward. I leaned heavily on my faith in God, trusting that He would make a way even when I couldn’t see one. Through prayer, perseverance, and obedience, doors continued to open—sometimes slowly, sometimes unexpectedly. Those challenges strengthened my faith and reminded me that this business isn’t built on money alone, but on purpose, resilience, and trust in God’s provision.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My business is built on intention, not just profit. Every skincare product and candle I create is all-natural, free from harsh chemicals, and completely handmade using the finest ingredients I can source. Quality always comes before the dollar amount.

This work is deeply personal to me—it’s a gift God placed in my hands, and I follow His direction in every step of the process. I don’t create just to sell; I create to serve, heal, and bring comfort. Each product is made with love, prayer, and purpose, and designed to be safe, effective, and nourishing for the body and soul.

I also take pride in crafting bold, unique scents that truly stand out—fragrances that capture anyone with a sense of smell and leave a lasting impression. My goal is for people to feel the difference the moment they use my products, knowing they were made with care, faith, and excellence.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Atlanta because it’s a true Mecca for Black business owners—a place where creativity, opportunity, and culture come together and make thriving feel possible. The energy, influence, and community are unmatched. At the same time, being old-school Atlanta, it’s hard watching the city change so much. Depending on where you go, it doesn’t always feel familiar anymore, and I sometimes miss the Atlanta I grew up knowing and loving.
