Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Scott.
Hi Rebecca, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been drawing and creating little creatures for as long as I can remember! I just always knew I would do something creative and it always felt like I would eventually work for myself. I was a server and bartender through school and for a little after, and it took a huge leap to commit to just painting and my line. It’s hard work, and I don’t always feel inspired but I’m really proud of myself. Atlanta is a great place to be an artist, there’s a lot of opportunity and tons of amazing festivals and shops to sell at! I also credit my parents for limiting our tv watching as kids, I read all the time and I really think it gave me a pretty magical imagination.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been some struggles. One of my biggest struggles has been my self-confidence. It’s still a work in progress, I have days where I just feel like I can’t do it anymore. I love what I do but it can sometimes feel overwhelming when you’re relying solely on yourself for success. I struggle with keeping myself on task-which is tough since I work from home and my dog is adorable. Inspiration is also a funny thing. It can come and go so quickly, you have to find other things to do in between those moments.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am primarily a watercolor painter. It’s such an incredible medium, it always keeps me on my toes. I create really bright and organic abstracts which I use as little environments to paint little creatures in. A lot of people will comment that my paintings just make them happy and I love that! They’re definitely whimsical little things. Lately, I have found myself shifting a bit though. I find that I’m diving into more abstract work (no creatures) with bright slashes of pastel chalk. After we had a great loss this year, I found my voice was shifting a bit. I had to find my way out of heartbreak. I’m proud that my work continues to evolve, but also still is very me.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is of my closet when I was little. I took all of my shoes out and made a little library with some of my favorite things. I remember feeling so safe all cuddled up in there, free to roam the universe in the books I read.
