Today we’d like to introduce you to Rondell Lockhart.
Hi Rondell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started with freestyles in middle school with a childhood friend in Virginia Beach. My uncle ended up pushing me to take it serious in my sophomore year of high school. He got me a studio with one of his college friends in 2014 and from there I was on my way. I dropped my first mixtape with some friends in 2015 and we sold out of physicals. After that, I did Shaggfest 2016 in Virginia Beach alongside Travis Scott among others. From there, I joined a couple different music groups trying to find my footing. Over time I realized my space and my pace so now I’m an independent solo artist working with my little community of artists and producers that share the vision.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not by any means smooth. The best description sometimes could be a war of attrition. I’ve been scammed, laughed at., outcasted. I’ve had tumultuous amounts of time wasted by those around me and especially myself. I’ve gone through heartbreak and heartache being an artist. All I’ve ever wanted was a community of cool people that just share a love for the art form but getting into the industry teaches cold lessons. Most of that love, isn’t there. From the artists, to fans alike. It’s hard to maintain inspiration sometimes and even harder to embrace new things along the way as comfort can confirm to complacency in the face of controversy. You have to constantly battle the battle and fall in love with it. Ultimately, I’m very thankful and blessed to have met and collaborated with everyone from my journey. I can only hope in retrospect they saw my vision like I have seen theirs.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The difference between me and others is the genuine energy. I’m me inside and out and I’m not afraid to show myself in its brightest and darkest lights. I’d like to say I’m the darkest star in the night sky. One could dream, lucidly.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Honestly, some of my best memories as a kid came from smoking with the homies and making up plans for the day. I was on the tail end of the green box era but back then kids were always outside getting into something. We weren’t bad kids, we had a natural affinity to adventure. For better or for worse curiosity shaped the majority of our adventures back in the day.
