Daily Inspiration: Meet Rontray Miller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rontray Miller.

Rontray, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began singing at a very young age in church choirs. Both of my parents were choir directors. I began competing in local talent shows and competitions at 12 and started writing and recording my own music at 15. I released a couple of mixtapes while in college, and decided that music was something I wanted to study and master so I went to college to pursue it. I was a part of a band called 770, released an album under my name Rontray, and then I took a break due to covid and the stress of life at that time. In 2021 I decided to pick the pen back up and dropped a single. 4 years later released an album under the name Marco Sway called “Marco Sway’s Cabaret” and have been performing in the area opening for burlesque shows and putting on my own shows as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been smooth. As a queer musician/artist, I’ve always felt the pressure of having to fit in a certain box or label or tailor my music to a certain box or label. I will say, that it’s definitely hindered me. I’m still a bit scarred from the journey but I’m pushing through and being the best that I can.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a director of music for non profits

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I would say collaborate as much as you can. I’ve been blessed to make really good talented friends and connections, and I think that’s because of my willingness and love I have for making music with them. Also, go support other artists, and see as many shows as you can.
