Daily Inspiration: Meet Samantha Webb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Webb.

Hi Samantha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started in theatre at a very young age, and by 14 years old knew that the only thing that I truly felt I wanted to do was to tell stories. Growing up in a family of artists; my mother a photographer and my father a musician, I was exposed to all sorts of mediums. I did fall into the belief that I had to find a way to make money and that I couldn’t support myself by solely being an artist. I think a lot of us fall for that because it certainly would be easier to find a job and make a steady income. Being an artist isn’t easy in our societies but I do believe that if you have a creative bone in your body, you should make as much art as you can, no matter the outcome.

Once I graduated from university with a degree I knew I wasn’t going to use, I started channeling my energy into acting for film. My college roommate drove me to my first film audition, and I knew in that moment that I could never go back to another life. I’ve now been a part of over 30 short films, most that I’ve acted in and some that I have been a script supervisor, a focus puller, an assistant director, and more.

I only recently made the leap to Atlanta from New England where I was raised. Atlanta is an inspiring city and it makes me believe that I have a lot of incredible work to do here.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think you’ll find a single artist that has had a smooth path paved for them. I think that the fortitude of artists is in their ability to make paths that otherwise wouldn’t exist. The difference is that your path is unique to you and it’s the journey that makes the art worthwhile. To answer your question, no, it hasn’t been easy. I’ve been riddled with doubt that my art wasn’t enough or that I wouldn’t be able to support myself, but there is nothing else that I was ever going to be. I have to tell stories, there’s no other path for me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actor, I am also a singer and a songwriter. Currently, I am planting my roots in Atlanta by making connections to the film communities here and by singing in my band. I am working on an album right now that I feel personifies a lot of my journey thus far and I’m really excited to produce it.

As an actor, I have been training with an incredible studio based in Canada for just over six years, which has allowed for more growth than I thought possible. Storytelling is the future for actors and it’s paramount that we focus our attention on that.

I believe that as artists, especially as actors, it’s crucial that we live and breathe storytelling. It’s so important to be watching films, reading scripts, acting in every space that we can whenever we are able, in order to transform our minds for our work.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The pandemic has taught me a lot about my path and where I want to go. The time of quarantine allowed rest and reconciliation with the unexpected nature of life. I saw this as a time to rest and grow and make the decisions necessary for my individual path which included leaving my home in New England and creating a new chapter in Atlanta. It’s taught me that the time we have is so precious, we have one wild and beautiful life and we must spend it doing what makes our hearts sing. We do not have time for anything else.
