Daily Inspiration: Meet Shakila Carr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shakila Carr.

Hi Shakila, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Shakila Carr, I prefer to be called Kiki . I grew up around hair my entire life. My mother as was a really well-known home-based stylist in my hometown of Erie Pennsylvania and I can remember at like three years old she would let me “count” her big stacks of money as she cleaned up from her day. From then on I loved to see the transformations and how people felt confident and beautiful when they left her chair. I began braiding around the age of nine and then I went to Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy where I completed a cosmetology program in 2010.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road. There has been many time where I doubted myself or I would always keep a part-time job so that can always have steady income because I didn’t think I can support myself  with just my talent alone.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a cosmetologist, which means I’m qualified to do just about anything in the beauty industry. I really love to do sew-in installs and braids, but I do EVERYTHING. For me, it’s the transformation. The before and after is what I live for. I would say I’m known for being me. The person that I am and how I make anyone in my chair feel welcomed and important. I’m proud to be the person that can make a person feel like a million bucks even when I’m not all there for myself. I’m really different from a lot of other people because of my versatility. There is nothing that I won’t attempt to do. I do all hair types, textures, and styles and I cater to all age groups.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Reliability and punctuality. In this business people really count on us, a lot of people schedule and book for a purpose. Sometimes it may be just for normal maintenance and self-care other times. It’s for a purpose or an event or something is coming up and when you have a schedule it’s very important to stick to it. I have heard lots of complaints from clients about how their previous stylist canceled or won’t start their hair on time and it causes problems and delays in their lives. I just like to put myself in the customer’s shoes at all times and think about how I would feel as a person.
