Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanicki Burton.
Shanicki, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m really just a small-town girl who always had big dreams. Growing up, I used to spend my summers in Tampa, Florida, and that became my little escape from the small-town life. Every visit opened my eyes to something new — the energy, the opportunities, the sense that there was so much more out there.
When I became a mom at 14, those dreams didn’t disappear — they actually became stronger. I wanted more for my daughter and for myself. We’d still travel to Tampa after she was born, and every trip reminded me that I didn’t have to stay limited by where I came from. That feeling of hope pushed me to want to see more of the world.
As a young adult, I traveled whenever I could — even if it meant working extra hours or saving up little by little. Each trip taught me something new and reminded me of the freedom I felt as that young girl looking out at a bigger world.
Eventually, that passion for travel turned into a calling. I realized I didn’t just want to see new places — I wanted to help others experience them too. That’s what inspired me to become a travel agent. It’s funny how things come full circle: the same curiosity and excitement that drove me as a young mom are now part of what I do every day.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a teenage mom from a small town with very little money and very little stability growing up made it very hard. But I pushed through with the support I did have.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I serve as the Executive Director of a public housing authority and also work as a part-time travel agent. My passion lies in helping others — empowering individuals to improve their lives and encouraging them to reach their fullest potential.
My career in housing began at the entry level, and through dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering faith in God, I advanced to the leadership role I hold today. Along the way, I’ve strived to set an example for my daughters, showing them that it’s not about where you start, but how hard you’re willing to work and how deeply you believe in yourself and in God’s plan. With determination and faith, anything is possible.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
It’s already planned.
