Daily Inspiration: Meet Sofia Ocampo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Ocampo.

Hi Sofia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in healthcare and the non-profit sector after studying International Relations at Rice University, but wedding planning found me by chance. After getting married in 2013, I came across a bride looking for a bilingual planner. I had only planned my own wedding, but something nudged me to reach out and to my surprise, she hired me. Over the next 13 months, I got a crash course in wedding planning, and I never stopped after that.

It’s easy to see my heritage in the heart of our company. Growing up with a Mexican father and a Jewish American mother taught me to embrace color, celebrate connection, and balance tradition with creativity. Those values along with my love for organization and people, shaped what is now Sofia Ocampo Events. Now, as my children grow older, I’m expanding globally, bringing the same fun, authentic, and refined celebrations to destinations like Mexico, Italy, and beyond.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not! Is being an entrepreneur ever a smooth road? There have been plenty of challenges along the way, but I truly believe each one has made me a stronger and a more capable business owner. What’s interesting is that the challenges are always evolving. In the beginning, it was about learning how to start a business, refining processes, building systems, balancing motherhood and work, moving to a new city, and creating new vendor relationships. Later, it became about growth and expansion, including taking our services abroad.

Event planning itself is full of the unexpected. You never really know what’s around the corner, which (depending on the day) I either love or hate! But through it all, I’m so proud of my team and particularly the recent year we just had. It’s stretched us in all the best ways, and we’re stronger because of it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We’re known for our vibrant designs, exceptional planning, and genuine connections. Warmth and hospitality are at the heart of everything we do; they’re always at the forefront of our approach. With my diverse background, I am especially experienced in planning multicultural events. We love finding meaningful ways to blend different traditions, cultures, and customs in a way that feels authentic to each couple. I’m so proud that our clients feel truly seen and cared for throughout the process, calm and confident knowing that every detail is thoughtfully handled.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking is such an important part of event planning and honestly, it’s one of my favorite aspects of my career. I love meeting new people and building genuine relationships. That said, it’s essential that these connections are authentic and that you show up as your true self. There’s no better feeling than finding your people, the ones who help you grow, listen, offer advice, celebrate wins alongside you or stick by you in tough times. Running a business is not for the faint of heart and having that support is invaluable.

I believe in this so deeply that a few years ago, my friend and colleague, Glorianna Chan, and I started a local networking group called “Gathered”. We saw a real need for more community among Atlanta’s incredibly talented creatives, so we began hosting quarterly events to bring people together. The response has been amazing, and we’re so grateful for the connections and collaborations that have come out of it. I’m also part of an accountability group, which meets twice a month online, with eight other amazing women across the country, who are not only colleagues but have become true friends.

My advice is that if this is something you are looking for, do not be afraid to put yourself out there and meet new people. While it can be scary, it is worth it and can be incredibly rewarding.
