Daily Inspiration: Meet Steve West

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve West.

Hi Steve, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Steve West, a 56-year-old creative based in Atlanta. I’ve been working independently since my mid-40s, building a career through design, jewelry, and now photography. Before all that, I spent five years in the Navy—a long time ago, in a different life.

I started out in graphic design after getting my BFA in the mid-90s. My early work was focused on print—clean layouts, tight type, everything on a grid. I liked design that functioned well and didn’t need a big explanation. When the web came in, it didn’t really click with me. I missed the satisfaction of something physical.

In 2009, I took a jewelry class as a way to get off the computer. No clients, no revisions—just tools, fire, and my hands. That led to Silver Piston, my handmade jewelry line. I grew it through Instagram and connections in the custom motorcycle world, which I was already into. I was taking photos at shows for moto blogs, and I shot all the product and lifestyle content for my brand. Photography was part of the process, but not the main focus—yet.

I actually learned photography back in design school, shooting black and white and developing film in the darkroom. But it wasn’t until 2017 that I decided to try portraits—something I’d never done before. I started with friends and worked on lighting, pacing, and how to make people feel comfortable. I spent a few years just practicing, getting better, figuring out what made a good portrait work.

Now, photography is a major part of what I do. Through Steve West Photo, I work with ad agencies, brands, and individuals—shooting portraits that feel honest and real. Executives, athletes, artists, and people who just want to look like themselves at their best. I don’t use heavy filters or over-retouch. My background in design and jewelry taught me how to see, how to build trust, and how to finish something the right way.

These days, I split my time between photography, Silver Piston, and small design projects with a print component.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Everything has peaks and valleys. No one see’s the work that goes into making it thru the slow times. Working on new ideas that don’t hit and going back to working on a new component to create something to make money from to live because that’s what your life is.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

I’m a photographer and independent creative based in Atlanta. I shoot portraits for individuals, brands, and agencies. I also run a handmade jewelry brand called Silver Piston, and occasionally take on small print and design projects when they make sense.

What do you specialize in?
Portrait photography, especially for people who want to look like themselves—not overly polished or posed. That includes executives, athletes, artists, and folks who don’t usually like being in front of a camera. I also specialize in making real things—whether that’s images, jewelry, or printed work.

What are you known for?
Honest, well-composed portraits that reflect the person, not a trend. I’m known for creating a comfortable space for people to show up as they are. Clients often tell me that my photos look like how they see themselves in their head—and that means I’m doing it right.

I’m also known for my jewelry, Silver Piston. It’s been selling for over 11 years and part of my work I do. It’s a style that’s got a timeless americana feel using vintage Buffalo nickels for my more original work.

What are you most proud of?
That I’ve built a creative career on my own terms. I’ve been independent since my mid-40s, and I’ve kept evolving—first through design, then jewelry, and now photography. Each part feeds the next. I’m proud that people trust me to create something personal and lasting, whether it’s a portrait or a ring.

What sets you apart from others?
I’ve got decades of creative experience across different mediums—design, product, photography—and that shows up in how I work. I know how to make people comfortable, how to build something that lasts, and how to make sure the final result holds up. I don’t chase trends or overcomplicate things. I just do solid work that feels real.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I’ve found just being myself is usually easiest. Sure, I rub some people but that’s alright, no one’s for everyone.
