Today we’d like to introduce you to Tahanee Shabazz.
Hi Tahanee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Boston-based designer and stylist who creates one of a kind collections inspired by many cultures of the world. I’ve always had a creative eye for pairing everyday looks with my handmade designs or creating unique pieces from top to bottom ready for the runway or statement for any special occasion!
I have been a designer for over 25 years and I am currently in the process of rebranding myself after many years away from the fashion industry. My talents have taken me to California, New York, and New Jersey, I have been featured in magazines such as Hype Hair and Black People; styling musical artists, and winning a “Designer of the Year Award” by New Day Associates. Through the years, I kept my passions going through interior decorating, visual merchandising, and creating pillow covers handbags, and personally styling people.
I am re-establishing my focus on fashion and as a personal stylist for everyday wear.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe that when you make the decision to embark on you journey to finding and fulfilling your life’s purpose life has its ways of testing you to see how bad you really want what you say you want.
Growing up in an environment where my talents and gifts were often not celebrated, that created a lot of fear and self-doubt. Not having that initial support early on definitely affected my consistency in pursuing my passions throughout the years.
It’s scary putting yourself out there when you feel like you aren’t good enough. And even with success, I would second guess my talents. I became hard on myself and discouraged, and at times I wanted to give up. But no matter what obstacle came my way, I would always find myself right back to where I am supposed to be, which is creating, doing what I love, and sharing my gift.
And always having the love and support from my children and my community have also played a huge role in my continuing on this journey. They believe in me and I believe in myself as well. They motivate me to keep going no matter what!
There is this saying that I heard some time ago that really resonated with me…”Feel the fear, and do it anyway”. That is something I will always take with me. I’m looking forward to this next chapter ahead.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have many creative outlets that I am very passionate about, but I am currently working as a fashion designer and stylist. I specialize in one of a kind couture pieces, and you can say that I am known for that as well.
I would say my proudest moments are seeing my client’s faces after our styling sessions. Their confidence and happiness is very fulfilling and reminds me why I love doing what I do.
I believe what sets me apart is my unique approach to designing. I love to create pieces that are edgy, bold, and tell a story but stand the test of time no matter what era.
What does success mean to you?
The definition of success to me is being able to pursue my passions whether it be on a global level or here in my hometown. As long as I am able to motivate and inspire others by doing what I love then I am truly successful.
