Daily Inspiration: Meet Tanya Little-Palmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Little-Palmer.

Hi Tanya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I changed majors in college my junior year from Political Science to Theatre Arts after spending a year abroad in Paris, France. On a whim, I auditioned for New York University’s Experimental Theatre Wing in Paris and was accepted. I fell in love with theatre and found my path. I was also introduced to Yoga that year and although I stopped practicing for two decades, I found my way back to the practice. Now art and yoga are an intrinsic part of my life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has NOT been a smooth road. I acted professionally for 10 years after graduating from college. I performed in Europe and throughout the United States. I moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and the acting roles were few and far between. I did print work for years but faced many obstacles when it came to getting on-camera work. At the time, there weren’t a plethora of opportunities for minority actors. I was told by more than one agent that “We already have one of you.” I was like, “Just one? Is there not room for one more?!” The answer was “No.” I ended up getting an office job and stepping away from acting. Honestly, my heart ached! I am an artist and needed a creative outlet so I began to design jewelry, got a gemological degree from the Gemological Institute of America and started my own business. Designing jewelry led me to painting as well. 13 years passed. I saw the industry open up and minority actors had more opportunity. In 2019. My husband and I relocated to Atlanta, GA. He encouraged me to get headshots and throw my hat back in the ring. I am so happy I did.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a sports print model, I did major ads for Reebok and Asics. I am most proud of my ability to learn and improve as an artist. I love the process whether it is learning how to identify a gemstone, design a piece of jewelry, paint a sweeping landscape or develop a character – it’s the art of observation that sets me apart. This focus and striving to be present is what makes Yoga so appealing to me too. I am currently working on a series of paintings entitled LIGHT IN THE DARK.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Playing outdoors in the woods and making up adventures. I’m still a tree hugger.
