Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Dance.
Hi Timothy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in sunny San Diego, CA. My mother was a single parent and raised my siblings and I right. She instilled in us the values I carry today. I dabbled here and there, trying things and also trying to stay out of trouble. But hey, boys will be boys, right? Life took me down paths that taught me valuable lessons. I became a father early, spent some time serving my country, and finally accepted my purpose. People and service. I’ve always had the heart to serve however I could, and I was born an entrepreneur. From the time I could remember, I wanted a business of my own. I’ve tried and failed at multiple business ideas or concepts. It wasn’t until I wrapped my purpose in the effort I was using in business that I found success. Not monetary success per say, but an internal feeling of accomplishment. That feeling comes from the service I am now able to provide with confidence. I haven’t quite reached my goal in business just yet, but I am definitely on my way.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not! I’m a bit of a hard-headed rebel. When life says no, for some strange reason I just hear yes! That hasn’t always worked out for me. I’ve spoken of my many failures. I say failures only because I have such a high standard for myself and everything I do. A more fitting description would be “lessons”. On this road as an entrepreneur, I’ve seen so much. I’ve had money stolen from me, I’ve competed with the big boys, I’ve traveled the world… And there were bumps in the road it seemed like at every turn. Just as recently as earlier this year, I had a major pivot in my largest business. As ambitious as my plans were for the company, sometimes it takes time. Like most entrepreneurs, it’s tough to be patient, but that’s just another lesson learned for this guy!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am what you would call an Everything Man. I know of the famous quote about the Jack of all trades. But most don’t know about the second half of that saying. In these evolving times, we as entrepreneurs most do the same. On this journey, I’ve learned many things. I also have acquired many skills that I try to utilize as much as possible. I am a creator at heart. So I’ve infused that into my business. I wear many hats as most entrepreneurs do. But what makes me different is my ability to tie it all together. For instance, if my company takes on a client, I could build their website. Design and create their content. Build their brand and marketing strategy. I could shoot and voiceover their commercial. Plan their launch event and cater it as well. I’m even working on my first book! I don’t mean to come off as a braggard. It’s just who I am and who I’ve had to become to serve my purpose and those I do business with. If you were wondering, the full quote goes, “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” I’ve learned from the balancing act this quote implies. And encourage others to do the same.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I highly encourage finding a mentor. So often, we as people have blind spots. A mentor can help point them out and provide the guidance and advice needed to continue towards our goals. Networking is extremely important as well. Everyone knows it determines your net worth. But also so much more. Opportunity, access, and genuine friendships come from networking. I’ve been able to find the resources I need in the DM! You can’t limit yourself for fear of rejection or being ignored altogether. I’ve sent thousands of cold emails, texts, DMs, you name it! Most times… CRICKETS! That’s just one way to network though. I frequent MeetUp groups, masterminds, seminars, conferences and other networking events for entrepreneurs. If there was ever a good use of the time you’re not spending working on your business, it’s networking. Shameless plug: I am always looking to network with like-minded individuals. So practice your DM strategy on me!
