Today we’d like to introduce you to Troy Massive.
Hi Troy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I come from a very musical family. my pops and mom were both singers in the church, my oldest brother played the drums, my second oldest brother sings and acts, and my brother right over me, Lefty use to rap (he pretty much inspired this whole thing). So it was by nature that I would be drawn to music but sports were kind of forced on me due to my size hence the name “Massive”.
I played football up to my sophomore year when they kicked me off the team due to grades after that I was sorta lost on what it was I wanted to do, I mean at this point football was all I knew. unknowingly I started dealing with depression and was seeking a place of comfort and that’s where rapping came in at first it was just writing out thoughts but I gradually started making those thoughts rhyme. I met my homie Chris who now goes by Kriz Klazik and we started to rap together and do talent shows. Around 2015 my sister introduced me to Sonny Digital and he produced my official first song. I dropped my first project “King Kovu” that October. In 2020, I got a phone call from my brother Lefty, he said he wanted to help me achieve this dream and basically fund my music so after a few different conversations, we decided to start a record label “Marvelous Records” where we added Staleface Beazy, Henzel, and a few other artists. That became a bit too much for us to handle seeing that we were the only ones handling day-to-day obligations but we also weren’t in the position to offer artists much so we cut ties.
In 2021, my photographer/videographer Kosher who I met Staleface Beazy through, introduced me to other artists like Big Rob, Ozzy X, D. Felt, Brudda, and now the other half of my group “88dgrz” Brint Story. We formed a powerhouse called Apartment 1026. This year I hit over 20k streams for my project “Stay Gold” my most recent solo project “Creme Dolla Creme” is still gaining heat as well as the 88dgrz project “Evil 2 Win”. Marvelous now consists of only two artists myself and Brint Story with Brandon Wicker as President and Kosher as A&R.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road but as cliche as it may sound the struggles I endured built character. I moved to Georgia with my pops when I was 16 I had never really lived with him before and he was married with his own church and I was pretty much in a religious household at this time. We weren’t allowed to listen to secular music but as you can see that meant nothing to me. There was this one time my pops caught me rapping one of my songs and of course, I had cursing in it. He took my rhymebook and burned on the grill. They constantly tried to get me to stop rapping but I was too driven to stop. That’s minimal to the struggles I’ve faced but its an example of how it’s made me stronger
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a rapper. As southern as I am, I’m highly influenced by east coast rap so that translates to my music. When you listen to me although my accent adds a country feel my bars are high level. I’m also old school so I enjoy the samples. I grew up in the church so every chance I get I show God love.
Since 2015 I’ve released seven projects, rocked stages across the southern region, but most importantly drawn eyes to Birmingham not single-handedly but just being a part of that is enough for me.
How do you think about happiness?
Beating odds, going against the grain, taking risks, staying productive, all of these things are what makes the Greats GREAT. and knowing that these things come to me naturally makes me happy.
