Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Johnson.
Hi Whitney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From as young as five years old, I’ve loved all things beauty. I can remember attending Mary Kay and Avon parties and being captivated. I come from several generations of well put together ladies, both of my grandmothers laid the foundation for me to grow into a beauty enthusiast. Some of my most fond memories are of visiting the various beauty counters in our local department stores with my grandmothers to retrieve Makeup, skincare and designer fragrances. After struggling to find my passion in college, I decided to tap into my talent and knack for beauty and enrolled in cosmetology school. It was time to take my gift out of the kitchen and into the salon. With the help of my friends and family, I began using them all as my mannequins. Cosmetology school helped hone and sharpen my skills and increased my passion for hair, makeup and educating others on all things beauty. With each new thing I learned In school, I was eager to share all of this new information with others. I knew that teaching beauty would be where I wanted to lay my hat.
After working in the salon for some time without the success I dreamt of, the corporate workforce called and I answered. I HATED IT! Fed up with being unfulfilled I took A leap of faith called one of my mentors, Erica Barnes Grant and asked if she had an opening in her salon; she said yes and I submitted my resignation and never looked back. She opened the door for me and I Ran back to the industry I loved dearly. Blushed By Whit was then born! I am a Licensed Cosmetologist, Freelance Makeup Artist and Beauty educator. I love teaching and educating people on the basic principles of hair and makeup as well as professional tips and techniques. To expand my teaching I created a weekly live-streamed interactive talkshow via Facebook, BeauTEA W/Whitney. I utilize almost all of my cosmetology license currently, from healthy hair care/Styling to my Luxury Virgin Hair Extension company Bundle God Hair Collection and Makeup Artistry/Education, I am pursuing all of my beauty passions.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey to where I am currently has not been easy. From building clientele from scratch several times to running my own business, I have faced many obstacles. I have done services for Pennies, struggled to support myself while trying not to get lost in what some may see as an oversaturated market. Learning to persevere through slow seasons has been tough but my loyal clients and referrals motivate me to keep going and to perfect my craft even more. I use each curveball thrown my way as a teachable experience.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
On any given day I am a hairstylist, freelance makeup artist, beauty instructor, owner-operator of a luxury virgin hair extension company, and Talk Show Host. Hair is my talent but makeup is my passion. I specialize in Natural Beauty enhancements. My goal is to highlight what my clients naturally possess. From braidless extensions like microlinks and tape-ins, keratin treatments, blowouts, Silk Presses all the way to soft flirty or bold and glitzy Glam, I’ve got you covered. Teaching women how to enhance and maintain their beauty routine makes me the most proud. I’ve have hosted two sold-out interactive Makeup Courses. Being able to sell out not once but twice was a huge accomplishment that I am so proud to have achieved. Because my interests span across the beauty industry, not having too tight of a niche sets me apart from others. I consider myself a one-stop shop. Being Certified in body hair removal, Brazilian Blowouts, hair color, Chemical Relaxers, Hair extensions and Makeup enables me to service my clients in various areas.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Making my clients feel beautiful is such an amazing feeling. It’s always a source of joy knowing I was able to make someone feel an extra boost in confidence. Seeing my vision come to fruition through hair and makeup gives me an outlet to express myself creatively while releasing my client’s inner beauty. As an artist having my muse love my work not only makes me happy, it’s a source of validation.
