Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Cummings
Hi Will, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from Glenn Hills High School in 2010, I began my career at Mustard Seed Video Production, where I developed my skills in video editing and production. I attended Benedict College in Columbia, SC, for two years, majoring in Communications. During this time, I worked for the school radio station and covered football and basketball games as a videographer.
Due to the loss of my scholarship, I took a two-year hiatus from my studies. In 2014, I enrolled at Augusta University, where I started working on films and participated in my first stage play, “Somewhere in Summerville,” written and directed by Anthony Page. I graduated from Augusta University in 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications.
Following my graduation, I focused on honing my skills as a grip and electrician on set, working on a variety of major films and commercials, some of which were featured on Amazon Prime and Tubi. I also gained experience as a photographer for production companies, capturing images of vehicles for dealerships and freelancing in portrait photography.
In 2020, Lamar and I co-founded LW Cinema. Over the past five years, we have successfully produced commercials, music videos, events, short films and weddings. Our company has had the privilege of working on a wide range of projects, from sporting events to feature films and television commercials.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey to where I am today has been anything but smooth. For years, I experienced homelessness and lacked a stable place to stay while pursuing my degree at Augusta University. During this challenging time, I reached out to various professionals in the city, hoping to find opportunities to break into the film industry. Unfortunately, I faced rejection as no one took the time to assess my knowledge or recognize my eagerness to learn.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in working on short films, movies, and commercials. My primary focus is on lighting as a gaffer, but I am also skilled as a key grip and actor. My experience includes key grip work on music videos and short films, as well as grip work on feature films.
What sets me apart is my dedication to continuous learning. I remain open to new knowledge and insights, understanding that there is always something valuable to learn from others. I absorb information, discerning what is important to me and what is not.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe in the power of networking and consistently seek opportunities to connect with others. Guided by the quote, “Your network is your net worth,” I make it a habit to engage in conversations with a diverse range of people. You never know who you might meet or what knowledge they might possess that can help you achieve your next goal.
