Yachan Yuan

Hi Yachan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
From the earliest days of my childhood, I had shown a keen interest in drawing. Back when my family lived in our old house, I would constantly find joy in sketching with colored pencils on the walls. However, I never received any formal training until I entered high school. It was during a chance encounter when I accompanied a friend to an art class that things began to change.

The teacher, upon seeing my drawings, praised my talent and encouraged me to become his student, suggesting that I should pursue a career in the arts. This unexpected praise ignited a spark within me, and from that moment on, I knew I had to explore the world of art further.

As the years passed, I honed my skills in traditional graphic design, but my journey took an exciting turn when I decided to venture to Aalto University in Finland to study Collaborative and Industrial Design. Stepping foot onto the vibrant campus felt like entering a realm of endless possibilities. This experience opened up a whole new world, transitioning my abilities from two-dimensional to three-dimensional creations.

Despite this growth, I still searched for what I am really interested in, and it was during this time that I stumbled upon the realm of visual effects and compositing. Combining both two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements, it felt like wielding magic, and in that moment, I knew with unwavering determination that this was the path I wanted to pursue.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey was not without challenges. Life has a way of presenting us with diverse challenges at every stage. And in those moments, they often feel like the most formidable obstacles we’ll ever encounter.

During high school, my artistic journey took a unique turn. Starting late compared to others meant I had to dedicate extra time to practice. With just three months to undergo intense training and prepare for the art exams, the pressure was palpable. However, the results surpassed my expectations, standing as a testament to my dedication.

The decision to pursue studies abroad added a thrilling new chapter to my story. Preparing all the application materials on my own, navigating through the foreign environment and language brought both opportunities and challenges. The experience of changing majors further enriched my journey, as it meant starting from scratch in various aspects. I viewed it as a precious chance to learn and grow, expanding my artistic horizons in unexpected ways.

Through each step. My love for art that fueled my journey has been an unwavering guide, guiding me through uncharted territories and motivating me to embrace every twist and turn along the way.
