Daily Inspiration: Meet Yanina Jimena Serrano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yanina Jimena Serrano.

Hi Yanina Jimena, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jimena Serrano, and I am the founder of Balloons By Jime.

With the long-term plan of moving to Atlanta with my family, I began my business in Tunisia while completing my Balloon Designer Diploma, with the goal of gaining the professionalism and experience I hoped to one day bring to this city. Each evaluation I passed was not just an academic step; it was confirmation that I was building something meaningful of my own. With every achievement, my confidence grew, along with my desire to create designs that went beyond traditional balloon décor.

I started working in Monastir, a city where balloon art was completely new and innovative. At the time, events were limited to traditional balloon arches. There were no character sculptures, immersive installations, or large-scale themed designs. I saw a clear opportunity: to introduce something different, artistic, and visually impactful.
The journey was not easy. One of the biggest challenges was the lack of quality balloons in the country. The materials needed to create professional, detailed installations were simply not available. I constantly had to find ways to secure enough inventory, plan far in advance, and work with limited resources. These challenges strengthened my ability to solve problems creatively. I began designing birthday parties, and soon schools started reaching out. My work expanded to other cities across the country, including the capital.

Then came a defining moment in my career: I was invited to design a school closing ceremony in a theater, where I had to cover 100 feet with an installation featuring marine and terrestrial wildlife. The project required more than a week of intense work. Seeing the final result — a space completely transformed through balloon art — was one of the most exciting moments of my journey. After a year of significant growth and invaluable learning, my family and I moved to Smyrna. This time, as I started again, I did so with a much clearer vision.

Shortly after arriving, I was invited to join the team for an important graduation event for balloon designers. Later, I traveled to Argentina to train future balloon designers, where I led four workshops for both beginners and professionals. I discovered that teaching and sharing knowledge also became a very meaningful part of my path.

Today, in Atlanta, my focus is on expanding Balloons By Jime into the corporate event space, collaborating with educational institutions — as I feel a special connection with children — and continuing to refine the art of character creation, which is the area I am most passionate about. For me, balloon design is not just decoration; it is a way of telling stories through structure, color, and dimension. My goal is to inspire others to see balloon art as a true form of artistic expression.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was not an easy journey. Completing a diploma remotely, passing demanding evaluations, and at the same time working and creating designs that would make an impact on a society that was not accustomed to this art form was a constant challenge. I not only had to prove the artistic value of my work, but also face the difficulty of sourcing the proper materials.

I was frequently arranging to import products from the United States or traveling to France to purchase the necessary supplies. Many times, I was working against the clock, having to secure everything quickly in order to complete each project on time.

I understood that for society to truly value this style of work as an art form, I needed to demonstrate the level of dedication and hours involved in each creation. One of the most creative initiatives I developed was building a pair of butterfly wings made from 1,500 balloons. I took them out into the streets and invited people and children to wear them, run, and play. It became a powerful way to bring balloon art closer to the community and allow them to experience it as something interactive and meaningful — not just decoration.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
From a very young age, I have always had a strong artistic inclination; I began taking dance classes at just three years old.

As I grew up, crafts and working with children were part of my everyday life. That natural connection led me to study and become a Kindergarten teacher. Later, my passion for hands-on creativity inspired me to train as a Professional Balloon Designer, as it is a field that allows you to connect through an endless variety of shapes and colors to express feelings and create emotional experiences for others.

I especially enjoy specializing in the creation of characters and animals, because it is an area where you can apply a wide range of techniques and bring to life everything from beautiful princesses to frightening witches, giving each story its own personality through balloon art.

Through this art form, I am able to combine charisma, laughter, and a touch of magic to create meaningful moments for my clients — and that is one of my most distinctive qualities.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that truly surprises me about myself is my curiosity.

If a client sends me a project I’ve never worked on before or an area I haven’t fully developed, I immediately dedicate many hours to learning and mastering it. I am always looking for ways to go one step further — often surprising not only my clients, but myself as well with what I am able to achieve.

I am especially drawn to projects that challenge me, and I genuinely enjoy the entire process of pushing my limits and overcoming those challenges.
