Daily Inspiration: Meet Yujie Huang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yujie Huang.

Hi Yujie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am an illustrator and motion designer who loves to tell stories through my art from Shenzhen, China. My Illustrations focus on storytelling and otherworldly feeling. I’m so lucky that I found my fascination with art when I was young. After thre years of learning fundamental drawing in high school, I can visualize anything in my mind. I enjoy creating magical and energetic images. Therefore, I chose to study illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for my undergrad degree five years ago. My experience at College helped me discover the infinite possibilities of illustration and refine my creative workflow. I also found my intrigue for motion media because it makes my illustration alive. I’m now taking both illustration and motion media Design master degrees at SCAD while taking freelance illustration jobs from different countries. I’m thrilled with what I’m doing right now!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road to where I am today is not easy but natural. I loved to draw when I was young; I always doodled in my notebook during that time. Then I got professional drawing training in high school; that was the foundation of my work. Then I got into the creative world, studying illustration at College. During my undergraduate years, I took many elective classes and online courses; that’s How I started taking graphic design and motion works. I’d always struggled with making big decisions because I knew they could completely change my life. Those decisions usually have to do with if I should take risks and try something new or just stay in my comfort zone. The most important decision I have ever taken is choosing to learn illustration in a foreign country when I was 18. this decision changed my life; I have become a much more mature and skillful artist now. As an illustrator or painter, changing the medium or the logic of painting is also risky, especially when I can create high-level images with a specific medium. However, I always feel a new world open for me after doing works that I will never show people with new mediums or painting methods. I can create pieces with new styles and apply them to my indicated style and workflow. Getting out of my comfort zone is painful, but I always gain something surprising from that, so I appreciate myself for making those decisions and my family for supporting me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create illustrations and motion works for advertising and publication. I love to create a surreal feeling in my art. I would describe my style as graphic, detailed and decorative. My work is full of colorful lines, textures, and decorative elements. Originally a watercolor illustrator, I combined my traditional background with digital techniques. I love the feeling and texture of traditional mediums and the flexibility of digital painting, so I always start my projects by drawing on paper, then bring them to digital with scanned traditional textures. Although I have developed a typical style of illustration, I am not limited by a single style. Depending on different prompts or projects, I can work with different styles like sketching, vector, and traditional Chinese painting styles. I also create dynamic and illustrative motion graphic works. I love to include humor in my pieces to make people laugh. With both skill sets in illustration and motion design, I can take on a variety of jobs.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I actually live in Savannah, but I’ve been to Atlanta many times. I love this city because It’s not too busy and crowded like New York City, but there are lots of places for entertainment like aquariums and shopping malls. People can choose the lifestyles they want.
