Hi Susan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! My name is Susan Spells and I am Pregnancy, Labor/Delivery, and Postpartum coach. Also known as a Birth Doula. I am also a Placenta Encapsulation Practitioner servicing the Metro Atlanta area. I support birthing mothers through it all. From the happy moments of pregnancy to the not so good ones. I help my ideal clients by giving them guidance to help their decision-making process prenatally and during labor and birth. I also provide physical support to help them relax, feel less discomfort, and help baby move into an optimal position for birth. I also create a safe space with each of my clients so that they feel safe to be able to be vulnerable and share their thoughts and concerns around pregnancy, labor/delivery and postpartum. To be able to provide them with the tools to have an informed birth where they can advocate for their preferences and needs in their birth space.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a smooth road. I believe everything happens for a reason and every struggle and every win is needed to get you to the next step.
We’ve been impressed with Susan The Birth Doula, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A birth doula is your very own personal birth coach! We are apart of your birth team to make sure the birthing mother and her family are fully sported on this amazing journey. I am there to help you cope and understand different things that may arise during your pregnancy, I am there to inform and educate you on your options and I am there to help you identify your preferences for birth and also help you understand what to expect.
We also go through positions to manage pain, confirm techniques, breathing techniques and more. I also specialize in Placenta Encapsulation and I also provide Postpartum Meal Preparations as well. Placenta Encapsulation is a process by which the placenta is gently steamed together with herbs, then dried in a dehydrator. The dried placenta is then ground into a fine powder and encapsulated into pill form making it easy to take in the first few weeks postpartum.
The doula packages that I have created are to give new and experienced moms-to-be the option to choose the level of doula support they desire at a flat rate. I also offer pamper parties in my Deluxe and Premium packages as my way of pampering birthing mothers and honoring them as a woman.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I have learned along my journey is that no matter what anyone says this work is so needed and it was no mistake that I was called at the age of 21 to start this journey and no matter what, I must continue on to be a voice for the younger generation and for the woman who looks like me.
