Today we’d like to introduce you to Todiya Whitaker.
Hi Todiya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always looked at my hustle as making money to get whatever I wanted in life. I was never that kid to throw on what my mom took out for me to wear. I threw on what I thought fitted me no matter how crazy it looked. I felt like I was me and nobody could change that. At some point, I had to start working for the stuff I wanted. I started my first business from working at Little Caesars + I got invested in.
I started selling lashes at school, a few weeks later, I taught myself how to do individual lashes. I feel like every hustler start from scratch, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and elevate from there. That was the start of my whole hustle. A few months later, after business was going good for me, I switched locations & business wasn’t the same anymore. I had to think of another plan. Whole year of 2020, I was full of procrastination of this new plan. I even got my business license eight months before my actual release date. I guess I was scared to invest in myself again & it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. I launched Big Head Barbie, LLC January 1, 2021.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is ever a smooth road for anybody who actually build there brand themselves. I built my brand from scratch. Reputation means a lot to me so I took however long I needed to take so it could be perfect this time. Over the time, from me moving to my launch date, things really changed tremendously. I not only had to live for me, I was living for my daughter Zoë as well. So being a new parent at 18 & trying to launch a new business for myself and my daughter was definitely not easy. I was staying up to not only communicate with vendors but making bottles and changing diapers. I had to stay float to do what I needed to do as a mother & to get things exactly how I wanted them to be when I launched.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Big Head Barbie?
Big Head Barbie, LLC is so unique to me because I made my brand to represent me. My slogan even represents me. “Everything Looks Better In Pink”. I live by that, my Range Rover is even pink. When your in love with your brand, everything that comes along with it, you go by it. I’ve always been known for being different because everything I do actually comes from me. Big Head Barbie offers not only Raw Virgin Hair in Body Wave, Straight, Deep Wave, & #613. I have my own hair supply kits custom made by my vendors. Kits Include Hair Mousse, Lace Tint Spray, A Hair Wax Stick, Barbie Lace Bond, Barbie Lace Bond Remover, and Edge Control.
No girl ever forgets her lashes so I have custom made 25-28mm lash 5 pack trays. Last but not least, I have my own branded crimp irons that goes up to 400°F so crimps are made to stay. My daughter’s brand The Zoë Simone Collection is also apart of my brand and includes Large Teddy Bear House Slippers in multiple colors which is also found on my site. All my items are always in stock. I want my readers to know that I will be also be doing hair very soon so stay on the lookout.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Building a brand is taking a risk. You never know if you might be successful unless you try. When I invested in my brand I never knew if I’d win or lose. I just knew I wasn’t scared to lose & I’m built to win.
