Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Hayes.
Hi Angel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Of course! So, I began exploring with makeup and learning different techniques while in college. I believe I was a junior and wanted to look more mature. Lol. As I continued to practice, I fell in love and quickly developed a passion for doing my makeup. It became a way for me to express myself. This is what peaked my interest in the beauty industry. I was unsure of the route I wanted to take in the industry, but I knew I wanted to be a part of it.
I sat on the idea of owning my own cosmetic brand because at the time, it just did not seem attainable. I had no background in cosmetic chemistry and no prior knowledge about owning a business. That changed for me in 2020 when I realized I wasn’t living up to my potential. I started jotting down notes on what would be my vision for my brand, but I didn’t put things into action until I was invited to participate in a photo shoot for my sister-friend’s brand. Seeing my girl in boss mode put fire to my feet and I was motivated to continue with the building stage of owning my own cosmetic business. After months of researching, talking to professionals in the business, sourcing inventory, and formulating, I was ready to put myself out there.
Coming up with a name for my business was a struggle. I wanted a business name that stood out and meant something, but nothing hit for me. I jokingly suggested Jilly B. Cosmetics because I have a Maltipoo named Jilly, whom I love like a child. My partner thought it was a great name and after giving it some thought, I agreed. Once I got all of the legalities out of the way, I launched Jilly B. Cosmetics in January of 2021!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve encountered quite a few struggles along my journey- especially being a new business owner. The most challenging for me was setting my own schedule and sticking to it. I was used to depending on a management team already having a set schedule for me and I had guaranteed pay. The transition to having to do those things myself and not really knowing when I will see my next pay day was difficult for me to grasp. On days when I wasn’t feeling my best, mentally, there was no one to answer to but myself and it was a task trying to remain consistent.
I was able to create a system that works for me, so I feel much more confident about my day to day schedule.
As you know, we’re big fans of Jilly B. Cosmetics . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
With the world filled with so many beauty standards, I created Jilly B. Cosmetics with the mission to provide the highest quality of products and encourage being yourself unapologetically while looking & feeling like a Boss.
I am extremely proud of the growth and visibility my business has gained in just a year and a half. From gaining quite a few customers from three different countries, being featured in the magazine articles, to getting connected to notable names in the business. It may seem small to others, but coming from humble beginnings- it’s means everything to me.
We are loved for our amazing lipgloss and semi-matte liquid lipstick formulas. We also offer the creamiest lip liners and our most recent launch, volumizing lip jellies- a glossy balm with a jelly-like consistency.
It bring me so much joy to know the impact my brand made so far and I can’t wait until Jilly B. Cosmetics becomes a household name!
How do you define success?
I define success as accomplishing something you’ve set out to achieve and being comfortable with yourself and your life. And in that success, you’re inspiring or motivating others to set out to achieve their goals.
