Exploring Life & Business with Anitra Walker of Walker Law

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anitra Walker.

Hi Anitra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Watching Clair Huxtable on Thursday nights at 8:00 pm is where it all began for me. At nine years old, I knew then I wanted to be an attorney. She appeared to have it all, a vibrant personality, style, a successful career, and a loving family. Also, her presence reminded me of my own mother. The seed had been planted. Toward the end of high school, in an attempt to decide between becoming an attorney or a doctor, I interned with the Criminal Division of the Pima County Attorney’s Office and at the University Medical Center both located in Tucson, Arizona. I was fascinated by the types of cases and the level of teamwork and professionalism the attorneys displayed. At the conclusion of my medical internship, I realized I did not want to work in a hospital setting. After high school, I attended Spelman College and graduated with a degree in Political Science. During my senior year at Spelman, I was a legal assistant for Attorney E. Earle Burke.

My time at the Burke Law Group served as a stepping stone in shaping my legal career and I am extremely grateful for his continued mentorship over the years. I took a gap year after Spelman and continued working with Attorney Burke. In the summer of 1999, I sold everything I owned, put my desktop computer and television in the backseat of my 1992 Toyota Corolla, and drove 700 miles to Baltimore to attend the University of Maryland School of Law. Since graduating from law school I have worked in a number of practice areas including healthcare law, criminal prosecution and defense, general practice, consumer bankruptcy, landlord/tenant, personal injury, and creditor’s rights. Currently, I give individuals and families peace of mind by creating comprehensive wills and trusts as the owner of Walker Law, LLC.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since starting Walker Law in 2019, one of the biggest challenges has been finding the balance between the demands of managing my own firm with the demands of being a wife and mother of five. Three tips that I practice to maintain a healthy work-life balance are prioritizing and delegating, leveraging technology to streamline work processes, and consistently practicing a self-care routine.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Walker Law, we focus on creating personalized wills and trusts for individuals and families with children.  Estate planning is not one-size fits all.  Becoming familiar with our client’s goals is essential in designing personalized plans that capture their wishes.  We advise our clients of their options and make appropriate recommendations that align with their overall objectives.  Also, the creation of an estate plan is not transactional but the start of a long-term relationship. Our ultimate objective is to ensure individuals and families are protected now and for many years to come.

For many the choice of contacting an attorney to draft a personalized will or trust can be overwhelming, but we understand.  We empower our clients by encouraging them to focus on their power to make these important decisions rather than the inevitability of death.  Estate planning is not only about who gets your stuff and how they get it but also who would step in for you in the event you are unable to make decisions for yourself, which includes who will raise your children.

As a mother of five, I understand the importance of ensuring my children and spouse are taken care of, and I want the same for every family.

Walker Law is an estate planning law firm located in Atlanta, Georgia, currently welcoming new clients.  For anyone in the Atlanta area in need of a will or trust, feel free to contact Walker Law to schedule your strategy session, 770-648-5071.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My advice for both finding a mentor and networking is to get out of your comfort zone. Keep in mind not everyone you approach will be available or willing to be your mentor. It is important to be flexible and have multiple options in mind. If someone declines, thank them for their consideration and continue your search. With regards to networking, it’s more than the initial meeting. It is imperative that you nurture and maintain connections over time. Be sure to stay in touch with your network by sharing relevant information and praising their accomplishments.
