Hi Charm, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started NextStep Immigration Form Prep in July, shortly after leaving my position at an immigration law firm in Lawrenceville. It was an uncertain time for me professionally, but I had long been considering opening my own immigration services company. As an immigrant who navigated the path to citizenship on my own, I understood how overwhelming the process can feel, and I wanted to help others through it.
With the support of my family and a pivotal loan from my dear friend, Zachary Parks, I was able to launch the business within just two weeks of leaving my job. My experience working with city governments and law firms, along with recently completing my associate degree in Paralegal Studies, gave me the knowledge and confidence to take this step.
While I started NextStep to serve my local community, my vision is to expand and help more people find peace of mind in their immigration journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting my company wasn’t necessarily a smooth road. While making the decision to move forward came naturally to me, and securing initial funding from a dear friend made the process smoother than it might be for many, especially Black business owners who often face greater barriers, it was still a challenge financially. I applied for grants and loans but was unsuccessful, and the small loan I did receive was quickly consumed by overhead costs.
Even so, I chose to push through because of my vision. I know this business is needed. By offering affordable immigration form preparation services, I’m helping clients manage an already costly process. That mission keeps me motivated, even when funding is scarce, because giving up isn’t an option.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe luck has played a small but meaningful role in my journey. I was fortunate to have a supportive family and a close friend who believed in me enough to provide the initial funding that helped me launch my business. That kind of support isn’t something everyone has, and I recognize how fortunate I am.
But beyond that, I wouldn’t say luck has been the driving force. My business exists today because of preparation, persistence, and a deep sense of purpose. The immigration process is something I’ve lived through myself, and that experience fuels my determination to keep pushing forward, even when funding is tight or challenges arise. So while luck may have opened a few doors, it’s been hard work and vision that have kept them open.
