Exploring Life & Business with Chasity Carswell of Collaborating Minds LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chasity Carswell

Hi Chasity, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a young child, I have always wanted to be in the medical field. I initially wanted to be an Anesthesiologist. However, I opted to go the scenic route which landed me right where I needed to be. I started my career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 2000. I worked really hard for about five years and decided it was time for me to be a Registered Nurse. I entered a LPN to RN bridge program at Middle Georgia College. It was a one year program which was accelerated and tough but I made it through. I graduated with an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing in 2005. I started working as a RN afterwards and found myself wanting to go a little higher in. I graduated from Macon State College in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. I basically worked with nursing agencies for most of my nursing career because I made more money. This way I was able to work at several different places and made my own schedule. At this point I became a Nurse Manager at a Child & Adolescent community mental health office. I was talking to a co-worker one day who was a Nurse Practitioner (NP). She recommended I go to NP school which really had me thinking. I started daydreaming again and wanted to do more. It seemed like I was never satisfied where I was. This resulted in me becoming a Family Nurse Practitoner in 2014. My first job was in an Internal Medicine Practice. I found myself longing to work in mental health again which was where my heart was. There was an opening in a crisis stabilization unit where I had previously worked. This resulted in a wealth of opportunities and the uprooting of my family from Milledgeville, GA to Loganville, GA. My last journey was becoming certified as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitoner. Mental health has always been my favorite population to work with. I met another great friend who talked me into attending Brandman University. Brandman offered an accelerated psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program in which you could also obtain a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Now I am Dr. Chasity J. Carswell, DNP, MSN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC. I have looked up to nurses who had a lot letters behind their name. Now I am one of them.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would not say it was smooth but it was doable. I was never one of those students who had the pleasure of being a full time student. I have always worked while attending school. It was difficult but it made me who i am today. It improved my work ethic and resulted in my resiliance as a person and nurse. There was times I needed to study but I also had to work which resulted in not being able to do the fun things I wanted to do, time not spect with family and many sleepless nights. I looked at it as what I had to do to be someone and succeed in life.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Collaborating Minds LLC?
I am dual certified in Psychiatry and Family practice. I work full time in Psychiatry. After obtaining my Doctorate degree, I decided it was time to open my own practice. I was skeptical because I knew it was not going to be easy but I do not back down from anything. I started my practice providing telemedicine services to include medication management, psychiatric evaluations, consultations and brief psychotherapy to children, adolescents and adults. When my clientele increased, my goal was to obtain an office space. June 10th, I started providing services in my new office. What sets me apart from others is my personable nature and willingness to help others until they are at optimal mental health. I am not one of those providers who does not listen to their clients. Instead I work with my clients in order to develop an individualized treatment plan. I put thought into my company name to close describe my approach, thus Collaborating Minds LLC was born. I have a proven track record in maintaining and stabilizing my clients. My specialty is psychiatric medication managment. In the future, I may start offering medical management as well since I am dual certified to provide mental and medical services. Many of my clients do not have primary care providers. I think my clients would greatly benefit from both services.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think of myself as a risk taker. If you do not take risks, how will you know if something you view as difficult cannot be done. You never know until you try. Taking risks assists you in reaching goals and getting to the next level. As long as the risks you take does not harm others and will be beneficial.
