Today we’d like to introduce you to Delaney Douglas.
Hi Delaney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originally born in Detroit, Michigan and have always liked and competed in sports ranging from skiing to basketball. Went on to Florida A&M University graduated with honors BS in Business Administration. Highly recruited post-college and chose the worlds leading pharmaceutical company to begin and end my corporate career in sales. Purposely got fired to pursue ventures in the music industry. My initial opportunity was to work on the marketing of Kanye West’s video Through The Wire (Won MTV Video Of The Year – introduced him as a recording artist). Later did work with BET (Spring Bling), Def Jam Recordings (Directed Rihanna EPK – to help launch her debut album), wrote and music coordinated for MTV’s The Shop (yep we did it way before Lebron’s), and signed multiple artist to recording and publishing contracts ranging from Def Jam/DTP, Jive, Atlantic, BMG, etc. Taught at Los Angeles-based SAE (Music Business) and co-owned a studio in NOHO.
One evening got a call from my cousin (Jamal Harris)… he was pursuing his boxing career and needed business and boxing advice. I come from a family of boxers based out of Pensacola mainly lead by Roy Jones Sr., my cousin Lemuel Jones, Alfey Smith, and most notably Roy Jones Jr. – I moved from LA to Florida and began training camp with my family and that grew my interest in sports performance and personal training. My cousin mention during Thanksgiving in Houston that he had a friend that wanted me to train them and that’s how I got my first client and later, while teaching high school English and American Literature studied for my first certification with The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM-CPT). Later joined USA Boxing training amateurs, then getting licensed for professional bouts in Texas & Florida. Other key certifications include USA Weightlifting L1. Currently training in Buckhead and the surrounding areas, including online training. I don’t make a big deal about training celebrities; whoever I do brag about getting all my clients to the goals and in better shape than when they initially joined FXM Training as a client. I’m big on efficiency and doing no harm to my clients never had a client seriously injured and have prefab/rehab just about every major surgery from on-field play or just deteriorating bodies from living a sedentary lifestyle.
This is the short version, but a lot of learning and life experiences have to lead to me choosing this profession and have proven beneficial to my over success in the field. You have to be a leader, teacher, therapist, listener, compassionate, harsh, enjoy science, and enjoy challenges daily.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, I’m a black man from a single-parent home raised in Detroit. I dodged enough bullets and ultimately made good decisions lead by a hard-working, intelligent mother that provided the best environment for my growth. Golf caddy, competitive black skier, only black kids on the ice learning figuring skating so I could play hockey (mom tricked me with that one – did the ice skating than when I asked about upcoming hockey season the answer was NO, and same for snowboarding LOL). But yeah, you get you won’t make it out alive, you have a bad attitude (and I did), or the worst you can’t do this or that not because of my intellectual capacity, or my attitude, but solely because of my skin tone. But guess what mom never said I couldn’t achieve something. She just always asked me to “Do your best,” so I don’t believe there is anything I can’t do or compete in.
I do my best and more than often that is more than enough to be competitive in all arenas education, career, personal relationships, etc. But yeah, we all have our setbacks I just like doing the work and seeing the results of my hard work coming to fruition. They said I wouldn’t make it out of Detroit. I couldn’t get into music (worked with some of the biggest names), I couldn’t work at MTV, I wouldn’t be able to teach the misguided children in my class… I’ve done all that am much more. The only thing that can stop me is a negative perspective and not putting in the work. When I do the work, I win no matter what or who tries to get in the way!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about FXM Performance & Training?
We specialize in personal training and sports performance while also providing nutritional advice and meal prep from our association with Taylor Made Simple Nutrition. Based on Atlanta, Georgia. If your looking for personal training ranging from boxing (real boxing, not the watered-down version you see in most posh gym/group class), strength training, specific injury prefab/rehab, weight loss/gain, or to improve on your field of play (basketball, tennis, soccer, lacross, football) we can deliver quantifiable results.
How do you think about happiness?
Being financially secure, supportive of my family, and enjoying an active, healthy lifestyle in my community with good friends. It makes you feel whole and comfortable knowing you moving in a positive direction while having great company to enjoy the fruits of your labor with. I always say it’s We, not just Me.
