Exploring Life & Business with Denise Tichenor Davis of RevNation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Tichenor Davis.

Hi Denise, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started out in the music industry, specifically the gospel music industry at the age of 18. I recorded my first professional gospel recording in Indianapolis Indiana, my hometown under the leadership of Al Hobbs and the Gospel music workshop of America choir. I was shortly thereafter, signed to the now, oldest standing gospel record label, Tyscot records, at the age of 20, as their first female, solo artist. It was all quite a whirlwind for me! My parents and I decided that I would go to college before doing my first recording. Therefore I went to Lincoln University of Missouri, where I received an academic full-ride scholarship. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in radio and television broadcasting. Thereafter I continued with my record deal with TyScot records and recorded my first solo project! Fast forward to now I have continued to operate in the Gospel industry however I’ve also built a brand in the theater and secular world as well. I have now some 30 years later, started my own independent artist consultation company to help other artists find their way in the music industry as an independent artist. The name of my company is called RevNation and we cater to the independent artists by giving them a wonderful support system to help them accomplish their goals.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. There were many family challenges that I encountered along my 30+ years of journey. Through this journey, I had many losses including both parents my two oldest siblings as well as my baby girl. These rough times taught me quite a bit most of all it taught me to appreciate every moment that I have with my family and loved ones. These challenges also gave me a testimony that I could share with my listening audience to help inspire them to keep going in spite of hardships.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I absolutely love our company, RevNation! It is definitely a company that was created out of empathy for the independent artist’s journey. I have lived this journey firsthand and throughout all of my ups and downs, I have learned quite a bit. RevNation offers a team to help support and assist an independent artists in truly meeting their goals and dreams in a practical and strategic way. We are going on two years in our operations and we have continued to grow every step of the way. We now have two tours going on simultaneously that allow our clients to take part in! We are extremely excited about these as well. One of the tours is a Motown tribute tour and the other one is a church tour! Each one allows for the artists to share their talents and music and to broaden and expand their reach across the country and outside of the country as well.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to any independent music artist is to be practical in their approach to their career. Don’t chase the carrot per se but follow your heart and your dreams. Be strategic in creating a plan of action that again, is practical and doable. Pace yourself. Build out a career that has the potential to be long-lasting and profitable.
