Hi Dez, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved art. Growing up I would paint and sculpt. During the school fairs, I would face paint and I loved it. I was taking some much needed time off of my crazy job and doing school. I came across this post on Nextdoor saying they were looking for a face painter. I thought to myself, “hey I could give it a try.” So I did and I fell in love with face painting again. My husband has been extremely supportive throughout this process. He is my rock and best friend. He lets me practice new and unique designs on him. He also helps with packing my car up, assisting with party favors and goodie bags I also make.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it has been going really smooth for me. Since that one event, I have been booked for most Saturdays out of the month. The party favors and goodie bags are still taking some time to get off the ground but I am hopeful. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that I can make money off my art. In the setting, I grew up in being an artist or doing freelance wasn’t an option, they weren’t “real jobs”. I know that it is completely false but it can be hard to remember when you were told that your childhood. I am very proud of how far I have come on this journey. I am hopeful and excited to see where Dez’ Groovy Creations takes me in the future.

I own Dez’ Groovy Creations, Face Painting & More. I also specialize in personal goodie bags and party favors. I do special designs for themed parties like Bluey, Western and Minnie Mouse Safari. I have three different types of packages for face painting, standard, deluxe and VIP.
My standard face painting includes 9 of my most popular designs or 6 custom designs. Deluxe includes standard plus glitter tattoos, these stay on for 2-5 days and are waterproof, great for pool parties. VIP includes deluxe plus every child gets a 3-d add on for their design. I hand make each of these 3-d blings.
The reason I stand out, other than my brightly coloured hair, is I absolutely love what I do and you can see it when I talk to the kids and adults. You can see it in my artwork.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. There is this amazing story about a guy who is blinded by this one thing, Daisy, that he wants so bad that he can’t see all the amazing things he has done for himself. It’s all about seeing what’s in front of you and appreciating the now. I have the second to last line, my favorite line, tattooed on my forearm as a reminder to live life. “Tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… and one fine morning-“
