Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Erica Franks, PT, DPT, OCS.
Hi Dr. Erica , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey into the realm of orthopedic physical therapy began with a childhood filled with movement and a love for dance. From the tender age of four, I found myself entranced by the rhythm of dance, a passion that later intertwined seamlessly with my dedication to patient care and holistic healing. Growing up, I immersed myself in a myriad of physical activities – from cheerleading to soccer, tennis, and swimming. Yet, it was during my time at Howard University, majoring in Dance Arts, that a pivotal moment sparked my interest in the field of physical therapy.
While at Howard, a knee and ankle injury challenged me both physically and emotionally. It was through the compassionate care of several physical therapists that I discovered my calling. In my third year at Howard, I made the decision to pivot my studies, shifting my major to Pre-Physical Therapy with a minor in Dance Arts. Thus began my odyssey into the world of orthopedics, fueled by a deep-rooted passion for helping others recover and thrive.
In 2005, armed with determination and a thirst for knowledge, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Howard University, setting the stage for further academic pursuits. My journey led me to Emory University, where I earned my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2008, laying the foundation for a career dedicated to patient-centered care and continuous learning.
Over the years, I’ve honed my expertise, earning advanced Board certifications in Orthopedics and expanding my skill set to include Dry Needling and Vestibular Rehabilitation. My commitment to excellence has been recognized through accolades such as the Top Doctors of America award in 2023, a testament to my unwavering dedication to the field.
In 2014, I embarked on a new chapter, founding Invigor Physical Therapy with a vision to provide personalized care to orthopedic patients within the comfort of their homes. This endeavor was fueled by a desire to offer holistic treatment modalities that encompass not only physical rehabilitation but also emotional support and empowerment.
In 2022, I expanded my practice to include a gym space in Marietta, GA, furthering my mission to foster healing and wellness within the community. In addition to my clinical practice, I am deeply involved in mentoring aspiring physical therapists and collaborating with Benjamin E. Mays High School to nurture the next generation of healthcare professionals through their sports medicine pathway.
Beyond my clinical endeavors, I am humbled to have been recognized by the Atlanta Tuskegee University Alumni Club nonprofit with the prestigious Pioneer Award in 2023 for my contributions to society and impact on the lives of others in the field of physical therapy. Furthermore, as a published author of the eBook titled “How Do You Start a Physical Therapy Practice,” I am dedicated to sharing my knowledge and expertise with fellow professionals, empowering them to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams in the healthcare industry.
My journey has been shaped by a profound belief in the power of movement and the resilience of the human spirit. As I continue to serve my patients with compassion and expertise, I am reminded of the words: “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.” It is this indomitable will, coupled with a holistic approach to physical therapy, that defines my ethos and propels me forward on this enriching journey of healing and transformation.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Navigating the path of entrepreneurship in the realm of physical therapy has been far from a smooth road. In fact, it has been a journey marked by challenges and hurdles that have tested not only my professional skills but also my resilience and determination.
In this business, you quickly learn that the responsibility lies squarely on your shoulders. You are not only responsible for providing top-notch patient care but also wear multiple hats – from being the social media content creator and marketing guru to handling administrative duties, managing finances, and ensuring continuous improvement in all aspects of the practice. It’s a constant juggling act that requires unwavering dedication and a willingness to adapt and evolve.
Moreover, the healthcare landscape, particularly reimbursement processes, presents its own set of challenges. Healthcare reimbursement is notoriously slow, and the rates for physical therapists often don’t reflect the true value of the services provided. Despite the immense skill and effort required to deliver exceptional care, the financial rewards may not always match the level of dedication invested. Additionally, in our current society, not everyone can afford cash-based services, further complicating the financial aspect of running a practice.
Yet, amidst these challenges, I’ve discovered a reservoir of inner strength that I didn’t know existed. Each obstacle has served as an opportunity for growth and learning, pushing me to redefine my limits and persevere in the face of adversity. It’s a testament to the resilience and tenacity required to thrive in this demanding field.
While the road may be fraught with obstacles, it’s the passion for patient care and the unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of others that propels me forward. With each challenge overcome, I emerge stronger and more determined than ever to continue my mission of empowering individuals to achieve their fullest potential through holistic physical therapy practices.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’ve found a few resources particularly helpful in both my professional journey as a physical therapist and in my personal life.
In terms of apps, I love Headspace. It’s a mindfulness and meditation app that helps me maintain focus and reduce stress, especially during hectic days. Another app that has been a game-changer for me is Trello. It’s a simple yet powerful tool for project management and organization, keeping me on track with tasks and goals.
When it comes to books, one that stands out is “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. It offers practical strategies for building good habits and breaking bad ones, which has had a noticeable impact on both my work habits and personal routines. Additionally, “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle has been eye-opening in terms of mindfulness and living in the present moment, something I strive to incorporate into my daily life, albeit with realistic expectations.
As for podcasts, I’ve found “The Tim Ferriss Show” to be quite insightful. While I may not listen to every episode, I appreciate the diverse range of guests and the actionable insights they share.
These resources may not have transformed my life overnight, but they have certainly contributed to my ongoing growth and development, both personally and professionally.
