Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenyatta Mireku
Hi Kenyatta, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Dr. Tunisia Cornelius -The beginnings of Levels 2 Skin really arose at the intersection of reading new scientific data on plant-derived bakuchiol, noticing my own skin frustrations as I matured, and a response to patient frustrations with complicated skincare regimens. I was dealing with adult acne, hyperpigmentation along with noticing new lines and areas of volume loss. I found myself as a dermatologist using a lot of products to address all of my concerns. Learning about bakuchiol sparked my interest as this one ingredient provided an advanced and holistic approach for skin aging by acting as as an 1) antioxidant, 2) anti-inflammatory, 3) cell cycle regulator, 4) collagen stimulator, 5) and regenerative molecule. At beginning of pandemic, I mentioned this to my cousin and fellow board certified dermatologist Dr. Mireku who was already thinking on sunscreens that would work well for all skin types and we decided then that 2 heads would be better than one and we joined forces.
Dr. Kenyatta Mireku: We also encountered several patients who seemed overwhelmed and/or frustrated by skincare. Given the oversaturated market, it hard for patients to know to know what’s actually helpful for their skin. We found that many patients were spending too much time on skin care as they were using skincare regimens with 7+ steps, using products that weren’t suitable for their skin, not knowing where to start amongst other concerns. As skin experts we decided it was best that we enter the conversation to provide clarity, education, insight, along with minimalistic routines that are easy to follow, effective and backed by science.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As dermatologists and skin care experts, transitioning from medical practice to product development has been a strenuous, fast-paced learning process and we have both acquired new skills in business management, marketing, and manufacturing. The hardest challenges have been navigating the competitive skincare market and aligning our products with the brand’s mission. We are overcoming the challenges of developing effective marketing strategies and educating consumers about the unique benefits of our products. Navigating the complex regulatory landscape for Over-The-Counter (OTC) products and ensuring compliance for all of our skincare has been tough, but we are confident that Levels 2 Skin is doing the necessary work to insure that are products are clean, safe, and effective. We are thankful to our network and supporters as well as organizations like the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs and ECOM Spaces who have truly help us build our brand.
As you know, we’re big fans of Levels2skin. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Levels 2 Skin was created by board-certified dermatologists and first cousins Dr. Kenyatta Mireku and Dr. Tunisia Cornelius. We sought to create a plant-derived, environmental-friendly, science-backed skincare brand, that is dedicated to blending prevention and restoration through a minimalist approach. Our mission is to offer simple yet effective skincare routines that deliver maximum impact while educating our customers on beneficial ingredients for their skin. We aim to provide optimal results with routines that are easy to understand and implement, promoting healthy, confident skin.
Our first launch of products includes the Bakuchiol + Peptide moisturizer, which can be purchased individually or as a set paired with the Hydrating Peptide Cleanser in the Ageless Set. These products combine Bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, peptides, and several plant-derived ingredients that work together to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and leave the skin feeling intensely hydrated. Consistent with our values of being comprehensive, we are currently in the process of creating a pure mineral anti-aging sunscreen that will be aesthetically pleasing for all skin types. We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Dr. Kenyatta Mireku: Spending holidays with our family. We have a close-knit family, and our events would always be filled with love and hysterical laughter.
Dr. Tunisia Cornelius: Family reunions are a cherished memory of mine. Every summer, we loaded up on 1-2 buses, to visit other family chapters and reunite in different states. The tradition of bonding coupled with family adventures, travel exploration, and broadening my horizon brings back so many fond memories.
