Exploring Life & Business with Dr. Kimberly N. Works

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kimberly N. Works.

Dr. Kimberly N. Works

Hi Dr. Works, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Thank you for this opportunity to speak with you; it’s an honor to be able to share my story. I first came up with the vision that it would become Pediatric Works while working as Vice-Chair of Pediatrics in a Corporate Healthcare System. I was truly frustrated at the state of affairs and, unsurprisingly, so were the parents of my patients. From what I could gather, our issues were the same.

Parents’ issues stem from their concerns for their children going unheard. Most want a present physician who isn’t concerned with billable hours or wants to fight with their insurance company. I created Pediatric Works to eliminate the middle person to allow me to work directly with families.

My frustration was due to the high volume. I had to see kids as if they were on an assembly line—one in, one out. Everyone got the same treatment and all issues needed to be dealt with in 5 minutes. I wanted to create a warm environment that focused on patient wellness and safety by offering a wider range of services within the office. To me, the most important offerings are same-day appointments, direct after-hours access, telemedicine, home visits, and mental health support. Thanks to this setup, I can now look at patients and family situations as they are: unique.

Last January was Pediatric Works’ 4th anniversary! Here’s to many more!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road?!?! I wish. Of course not. I decided to step out armed with faith in my idea. I had to start from the bottom by first googling how to write a business plan! Now, four years in, I have gained tremendous confidence in entrepreneurship and met many mentors along the way.

However, one of my biggest struggles was challenging the notion of needing to use your medical insurance. At Pediatric Works, we don’t engage with 3rd parties because we want to work directly with families. This way, parents can dictate what their child needs.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Pediatric Works?
Pediatric Works is a Pediatric Concierge Practice. Concierge medicine is a direct relationship between a patient and their doctor. I have a limited patient panel so I can be available to provide adequate time for each patient. Rushed visits, unanswered calls, and long waits aren’t things here!

At Pediatric Works, we are different from other concierge practices because we are a boutique practice that focuses on your time and privacy. Your 1-hour scheduled appointment can be in your home, in our office, or virtually. We support our families because they have busy lives. They range from new patients to families with multiple children, bi-coastal families, and families with children with disabilities.

Outside our scheduled times, if needed, my family just calls. They can chat with me directly after hours, on weekends, and holidays for quick medical advice. They are speaking to me directly, not a call center or random person who doesn’t personally know their child.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Diversity! Diversity is what I love about our city. If you take a drive across town with your windows down, you’ll hear a wide array of different music, see a variety of ethnicities, and feel different cultures. Additionally, our city is a hub for the arts, with numerous theaters, galleries, and music venues.

However, the city grapples with socioeconomic disparities that are particularly evident in the discrepancies between affluent and struggling neighborhoods, which have only intensified with the housing market and inflation. Income inequality, coupled with pockets of poverty, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Atlanta in fostering an equitable and inclusive community.
