Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Knapp.
Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My art journey started with my grandmother Jean Ledford. I used to spend the summers with her and we were always doing some kind of amazing art and craft project. She used to have a wheel in her basement and I remember going down and being absolutely awful but having a blast none the less. I am where I am today by staying true to myself and learning to trust myself as an artist. I always strive for balance in my life. We love adventure and traveling and I believe that fuels the inspiration for my art.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I really struggled with who I was as an artist when I first got out of college. I remember the first show I did, it did not go well at all. I was making and selling the same stuff I had worked on in college that just wasn’t true to who I was. I had to find myself which wasn’t easy. I definitely had an epiphany after that show… how could I sell my work if my heart wasn’t 100% in it? I took the next year really exploring and creating work that I was extremely proud of. I remember the piece that changed it all, I still have it. It may seem silly but I felt like that one piece was a defining moment and it completely changed my entire art career.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am SO excited because I recently just expanded and added a new building to my studio. Now I have my personal studio (EK Studio) and EK’s Art Barn. I host several classes there each week. Pottery date night is definitely the most popular! I teach kids, adults, homeschool and more. Our Farm also recently adopted a homeschool CoOp Wildwood Nature Academy. They offer the most unique programs. I would say the thing that sets us apart is by far location. We are on a private farm situated on 15 peaceful acres.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think being outgoing and a people person definitely helps my success. It’s also important to continue to push your limits while maintaining balance. I am always striving to be better in my personal art and in teaching.
