Today we’d like to introduce you to Gurleen Kaur.
Hi Gurleen , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey has been more of an exploration of the different avenues that the study of the human body provides. I was always fascinated by how it works and how complicated it is. It first started with learning the basics, which led me to complete my Internal Medicine training. During that training, I became particularly interested in kidney diseases, which inspired me to pursue a fellowship in Nephrology from Emory University in Atlanta. During my Nephrology training, I realized how complex many of my patients were—and how complex their needs were. Unfortunately, due to time limitations, I was unable to provide the handholding and emotional support that so many of them needed. I could see the fear in their eyes before starting dialysis, and yet, with limited appointment times, there was only so much I could do, even when I desperately wanted to do more. I began to notice how the conventional model of practicing medicine focused heavily on lab values and protocols, often providing only the bare minimum. I kept asking myself: how can we bridge this gap? What else can I do for them?
Suddenly, COVID provided the time I needed to reflect on how to make this work. While researching non-conventional ways of helping my patients, I stumbled upon Integrative Medicine. I had the privilege of training under the pioneer Dr. Andrew Weil himself, and I realized how upside down the conventional medical system was. I discovered scientifically relevant tools that not only applied to my own life personally but also gave my patients the extra support they needed to empower themselves to heal. I began using many of these principles in my own life, and by integrating my strong foundation in conventional medicine with this new, more holistic approach, I was able to personalize care for my patients. I realized that medicine is more of an art than a set of rigid protocols—and that one size does not fit all. This realization meant everything to me. It changed me, not only as a physician but as a human being. It opened my perspective and allowed me to see beyond the glass ceiling that once separated me from my vulnerable patients. I learned to walk alongside them, to stand in their shoes, and I was struck by how superficial the practice of medicine had become. To offer the kind of care I would want for my own loved ones and my beloved patients, I founded Reliance Medical Center. I hope to create a healing space that the community can rely on—where they feel welcomed, appreciated, heard, and nurtured. This vision requires hard work and innovation, but I am already beginning to see the fruits of that labor. I hope to expand this model across communities and touch more lives, because I know there is a deep need for the kind of compassionate medical practice that corporate systems often overlook. Through this dream, I hope to deliver love and passion to the most vulnerable among us.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I always knew that starting a private practice wouldn’t be easy, and I was prepared for the challenges that would come my way. Still, my passion continued to drive me forward. When you have the end in mind, the journey becomes more meaningful—even enjoyable. Because this was a deeply personal investment tied to my own growth, I was able to approach the obstacles with greater compassion. At one point, my mind was constantly buzzing with ideas—it was hard to turn it off. But eventually, it was time to move from brainstorming to action. To reach more people, I chose to operate within the insurance model. Delivering personalized care in that framework was difficult at first, but it became easier as I learned alongside my patients. Today, I can confidently say that I know my patients personally—I understand their journeys, their fears, and their needs. When they place their trust in me, the partnership becomes powerful. I thrive on continual learning and will always be a lifelong student of medicine and the healthcare system. I view every challenge as an opportunity to grow and improve, and I believe that while going with the flow may be easier, it is far more rewarding to fight the waves and carve out your own innovative path.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I founded Reliance Medical Center with love and compassion, guided by the dream of creating a place where every person feels truly at home, cared for, and deeply heard. The journey to make this vision a reality took time, but every step—from selecting the colors on the walls to creating a space filled with warmth—was done with the intention of reflecting my healing philosophy and offering comfort to those who walk through our doors. At Reliance, we provide the full spectrum of primary care, including annual checkups, pap smears, men’s and women’s health services, and management of chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders, asthma, infections etc.. What makes our care unique is the way we go beyond the traditional model by embracing a whole-person, integrative approach. Instead of focusing only on symptoms, we strive to uncover the root causes of illness and design care that is as individual as the patient in front of us. This often includes advanced testing such as gut and microbiome assessments, food allergy and genetic testing, cholesterol panels, salivary cortisol, and nutrition evaluations. We also specialize in diagnosing and treating Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), which is often overlooked but can cause persistent bloating, indigestion, and other gut issues. Beyond testing, we support healing with thoughtful, personalized therapies, including weight loss programs, individualized nutrition planning, Ayurvedic body-typing, and herbal or nutraceutical supplements with carefully selected vitamins and minerals. For those needing an extra boost, we also offer customized IV therapies to enhance energy, recovery, and overall vitality. As a board-certified nephrologist, I bring deep expertise in kidney care, offering comprehensive treatment for chronic kidney disease, protein in the urine, kidney stones, and other related conditions, always with a whole-body and holistic outlook. At its heart, Reliance Medical Center is more than a clinic—it is a sanctuary for health and healing. Here, we believe in building health, inspiring wellness, and walking alongside you on your journey to living your healthiest, most vibrant life.
