Exploring Life & Business with Halimah Washington of CASMIR

Today we’d like to introduce you to Halimah Washington.

Halimah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Aspiring reporter turned boutique owner– my life was never what I expected it to be.

Originally studying International Relations in Alabama, studying abroad in South Korea and later finishing my degree in Speech Communications/Journalism at Georgia State University… I’ve always found other people’s stories intriguing. Growing up, I attended an elementary school with over 50 nationalities represented—so from a young age, I was surrounded by different cultures and perspectives. It left a lasting impression on me.

Growing up being the youngest of eight children, involved in lacrosse, cheerleading, softball, choir, Social Justice Academy, an ambassador to my school and even French Club president (even though I barely spoke any French!)… I was always deeply involved in my community. All of these experiences had one thing in common: people. I realized that everything I was drawn to was centered around connection and soft skills.

This realization and my strong interest in international relations, lead me to pursue reporting. I was then unexpectedly recruited by an agency to work at wholesale apparel markets during college. I saw this as a great opportunity to experience something new and network while still focusing on my studies. The more I worked these markets and began traveling for them, I realized reporting was not the only route I could take to utilize my skills while incorporating my interests. Working in this field was a huge catalyst for me creating CASMIR. Seeing all the different styles, the trends come and go and learning the industry… I further realized my own style. A combination of these expiriences, my naturally creative inclination and a love for fashion is what made CASMIR come to fruition.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. I first launched my boutique at the end of September 2024 but didn’t actually sell my first full collection until the end of February this year. A mixture of finances, bad timing, other priorities and perfectionist tendencies overwhelmed me and diverted my focus from the business. This is where I learned to let go and let God. This is where I began to move by faith and not stress myself out by things that I considered a set back. The only set back was myself. So I put my head down, stayed focused, remained patient and got to work. Rather than spending hours questioning the font on a header, I just posted it. Rather than stressing over being constantly active on all media platforms, I started with what I am comfortable with. I strive to be diligent and am learning to do things naturally as I can when they come and accept the results for what they are. What’s the worst that could happen?

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about CASMIR?
CASMIR is actually my middle name and is a women’s clothing boutique that focuses on timeless and refined capsule wardrobe pieces mixed with one of a kind, it-girl styles that stand out in any room.

Sexy doesn’t always have to mean skin tight. Silhouettes that compliment your body shape without having to be full body contouring. The shirred waist drop that cinches but doesn’t restrict, the petticoat made of tulle that holds its shape, but still freely moves with every step you take, the maxi muumuu dress that naturally tapers as it lays down on your body, the oversized sleeves with subtle outline stitching that accentuates its clean cut lines– emphasizing femininity in a way that you’re comfortable in. An open back dress that is slightly gathered instead of cut straight, so that your silhouette isn’t made to look boxy… the details matter. Focusing on flattering silhouettes is the core of CASMIR.

What matters most to you? Why?
God.

First and foremost He is the reason I am able to do anything in life. All glory and honor to him. I’ve found it impossible to not mention my faith when asked questions like this. With the miracles he’s worked and the amount of grace and guidance He has led me with… I would be a fool to not acknowledge that. It’s evident that He has and will continue to consistently be the solid foundation of my life. At the end of the day, this is more than just a business for me, but a ministry God has trusted me with in this period of my life.
