Exploring Life & Business with Heather Robinson of The Tipsy Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Robinson.

Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in a Caribbean household, surrounded by family members who can cook their butts off, and my father is no stranger to the kitchen. My father loves to cook from chicken curry to oxtail with rice and peas; my dad was on it. That’s where I got my creative gene. I didn’t start my baking journey until my mid-20s. I would make cakes for friends and family for special occasions, and they loved it. When COVID hit spring of 2020, I worked at a cosmetic store inside the airport. It closed down temporarily due to high covid outbreaks. From April to November 2020, I had a lot of time on my hands, so I decided I would take on baking for the time being to create something that was a hobby for me into a full-blown baking production. n November 2020. my job decided to let me go permanently. At that point, I had only two choices, Get another tedious cosmetic job or turn my baking hobby into a profitable business; I haven’t seen Ruby Woo lipstick since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This past year has been the ultimate struggle. During a whole pandemic, I’m learning how to cultivate my passion for baking into a thriving and stainable business. Calling myself a business owner is something odd for me. As a millennial myself, we are constantly changing our paths in life, and I never thought owning my own business would be one. My immigrant parents tend to have a very straightforward outlook on life. Being a first-generation American, you are supposed to go to college, receive a degree, and get a great job to support yourself, and the rest is self-explanatory. The road that I’m traveling now has its ups and downs. I struggle a lot with self dought, but I continue to reinsure myself that it will be all worth it in the end.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Tipsy Baker?

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for those starting is to trust the process. It might be scary initially; it was for me because my safety net was my nine-to-five, and when they let me go. I had to reevaluate my purpose in life find something that genuinely makes me happy. Don’t Kill Yourself For A Job That Would Replace You Within two Weeks If You Dropped Dead tomorrow.
