Hi Jasmine & Crystal, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It’s quite interesting, really. My dream of having my own magazine was ignited by a childhood favorite, ’13 Going on 30.’ The idea of owning a publication always held a special place for me. Now, let’s jump ahead to December 2022, when I was in the midst of collaborating with a magazine brand. At the time, I believed this magazine was tailored perfectly for businesses like mine, with content that seemed to align seamlessly with our target audience, I even brought Jasmine along with me.
However, as we delved deeper into the partnership, it became apparent that my initial assumption was not accurate. Consequently, I made the decision to part ways with that brand. But here’s where the real twist comes in – I joined forces with my business bestie, Jasmine Hawkins. We decided to channel our passion and expertise into creating ‘Becoming Her Magazine’ together. With Jasmine by my side, I had unwavering confidence that we could elevate this magazine to new heights as a team.
When Crystal invited me to join her on this exciting new journey, I was filled with both enthusiasm and apprehension. Starting our own magazine was a thrilling prospect, but the uncertainty of where to begin weighed on us. In the lead-up to our official launch date on March 8, 2023, we invested countless hours in extensive research, determined to lay a solid foundation for our venture. We coincided our launch day with International Women’s Day to add an extra layer of significance to our mission.
At Becoming Her Magazine, our mission and vision are deeply rooted in amplifying women’s voices, one story at a time. We’ve forged a platform where women not only feel empowered to share their own unique stories but also inspire others to do the same. Through this collective empowerment, we’re creating a ripple effect of shared experiences and inspiring narratives.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As we celebrate our remarkable journey of seven months in the magazine business, I want to share a valuable lesson with you all: You’ll encounter numerous ‘no’s’ before those coveted ‘yes’s’ start rolling in! Our official journey began in December 2022, and we proudly launched our inaugural issue in March 2023, featuring the incredible mentor, Crystal Swain-Bates, as our cover star.
However, it hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Along this path, we’ve observed that not everyone is as supportive of our brand as we’d hoped. From the frustration of unanswered emails to past features neglecting to share their appearances in our publication, we’ve faced some challenges. Brand visibility and awareness have been an ongoing struggle for us.
But here’s the inspiring part – despite these hurdles, we remain resilient. We’re constantly pivoting, exploring new avenues, and relentlessly showing up for our brand. We understand that perseverance is key, and we’re excited to continue this incredible journey with all of you.
