Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Hunter
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jasmine Hunter AKA Mermaid Amia Koi. My story started in March of 2023. I applied for a job as a performing mermaid for a aquarium / petting zoo in stonecrest georgia. I got the job and was extremely excited so I purchased tails, crowns, waterproof makeup, etc for this job… After a month of working there the demands for a customer service representative outweighed the demand of the job I was hired for. The company forced me into this position and lowered my wages. After a few weeks of not being able to showcase my talent and grow in my craft I decided to leave the company in search of more mermaiding opportunities. I applied for a few party character services hiring for mermaid performers. Unfortunately I was not the Ariel with the red hair and the blue eyes that the companies were looking for. I thought to myself why aren’t there any black mermaids? Then something clicked in my mind, I should start my own mermaiding business catering to the melanated people of the world, Melanated Mermaid parties was born! When I first started hosting parties it was a bit slow in the beginning and that was because I only promoted myself through flyers that I printed off and handed out at parties or was allowed to leave a stack in certain businesses. Over the last 2 years we have grown and have multiple mermaids of color available for hosting birthday parties corporate events and photo shoots. We are AED certified, lifeguard trained and we offer mermaid swimming lessons.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been smooth but very slow.
As you know, we’re big fans of Melanated Mermaid parties . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We specialize in Mermaid entertainment. We offer glitter tattoos, story time, pool games and swimming lessons for our splash party. We also have an in-house photographer for our premium package which includes a photo op for the birthday girl with provided mermaid tail in their size.
