Exploring Life & Business with Jason Autry of Southern Vet Sweets

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Autry.

Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started after I was injured in the military then discharged. I had 1 job for 15 years after that, doing land clearing. Then one day I had a near death accident and wasn’t able to go back to tge only job I knew, which was hard labor. I became severely depressed and attempted to end my own life. I am a season ticket holder for GA Tech Football and about 8 years prior to that, we had these cinnamon pecans and she suggested that I try to make them. After that I became obsessed with baking ans making flavors of pecans that no one ever sees. That turned into me baking other items and trying to see just how creative I could get and making my own recipes. I soon became obsessed and will now accept nothing less than perfection when it comes to the quality and flavor of my products. My motto is “flavor before flair”. I started with $0 in my pocket and some random ingredients in my pantry. I am still a very small business who struggles financially. I have never paid for advertising and have never borrowed money. I literally started from nothing and will stop at nothing to reach my goals.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been everything but a smooth road. When I started after my accident, I had never baked anything more than a frozen dinner in my life but I knew i wasn’t going to quit after I failed so many times to get my recipes right. Obviously, starting with $0 and never having borrowed money, finances have been a struggle. I’ve also learned so many of the other struggles of owning a small business, such as social media skills, money management, the health department side of running a food related business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Southern Vet Sweets?
I specialize in gourmet flavors of baked items, with my specialty being a huge variety of flavored candied pecans such as bourbon, cinnamon rum, salted caramel, apple cinnamon and so many other flavors.

I would love for readers to know that I only use top quality ingredients and will accept nothing less than perfection for my products. I also want them to know that I built this on the idea of making a gourmet product that doesn’t cost gourmet prices.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am a small and local disabled veteran owned business.

Pricing:

  • All flavors of pecans are $10
  • Other baked goods vary but rarely is any one item (other than larger cakes) more than $10
