Exploring Life & Business with Kendra Dennis of KonturedByKen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Dennis.

Hi Kendra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I always wanted to be a surgical nurse because I was just so in love with the anatomy of the body, plus the idea of helping others as much as possible was alwalys big thing to me. In my last two years of high school, I became a Certified Nurse Assistant. Upon gradutating I realize being a CNA wasn’t for me because of the pay wasn’t worth the work. I ended up attending Piedmont Technical College that fall of me graduating from high school but it didnt work out because going to work, trying pay bills, keeping up with school work and more was just too much to handle at the time by myself so I flunked out.

In the mist of everything I ended up getting pregnant and starting my beauty career at Empire Beauty Institute. Being pregnant didn’t stop me from trying to pursue my career in the beauty industry. I feel as if it push me and made me take life a little more serious. Now I felt like I had a purpose to really make something out of myself. Fast foward a year later I ended up having another child unexpectly but as women, as mom we are bult to fight through whatever the challege may be. At the time I was doing instacart fulltime while doing hair on the side every now and then still being a fulltime mom with no help, I was still able to mange it all. Somehow just one morning I woke up and looked at my kids and said “I’m not going hard enough”. Withn the next day I had found a shop off of Cander Road in Decatur, GA, off facebook market. When I say that was the best feeling I had, had in a long time, it was! I knew it was up from there. Every since then I’ve been working for myself and haven’t looked back since. Over the seven months I was there, I grew a large clientel and felt like I needed to expand a bit more. So now I have a suite located in Stone Mountain,GA and been here almost a year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Still to this day I’ve have different struggles whether its mildly or servre. Business wise I always run into challeges like trying to figure out what’s going to take me to the next level, how I can accumulate more revenue, how to keep clients coming back or gaining new cleints. I’ve learned that marketing is key but great customer service is what puts the icing on the cake for running a great business. It’s alot of things I’m trying to learn under my belt so I can turn these challenges to wins. As far as my personal life I’m trying to balance my work and spending time with my kids as much as possible. I come from a family where toxicity is teached and preached and that’s from both sides. I had to realize that loving family from a distanced is what was best for me, as much as I hated the idea of that because I’m so family oriented. I felt like that was the best decision because I want my kids to grow up in a loving environment with positive mind sets. It hurted for a while knowing that the people I once admired couldn’t take the time out to support me or see the growth in me, after supporting them for so many year throughout their journey, but sadly not everybody wants to see you grow or potiently be better than them but nobody can interfere on god’s plan. So with that being said the biggest challege I have is stay mentally sane through it all while still maintaining a business.

As you know, we’re big fans of KonturedByKen. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Kontured ByKen LLC was established in 2019. I was sitting in class when I came up with name. To me contured meant transformation and by ken was from my actual name “kendra”. My business provdies over 30 services and can work with most hair textures. We specialize in knotless and feed-ins braids, quick weaves, sew-ins, silk presses, locs, make up and more. What sets me apart from others is that I preach diversity, self love, positivity, and women empowerment. Also the fact that I’m able to relate to everybody that has sat in my chair. Not being afraid to share my story and being authentic with my clients is what makes them love and enjoy their time with me even more. As business owners majority of them put on a front like life is great and they dont have any problem but not me. Your struggles and challenges are what makes you the person you are today. I feel like my mission is to shine more light on people’s inner beauty more than their outter beauty. So I’ll be starting a Non- profit organaztion for single moms like me called “A Milf’s Mental Health” stay tuned!

How do you think about happiness?
My kids for the most because without them I don’t think I would be the independent women that I am today. Hair and Make up comes next because that’s my passion and being able to make somebody feel great about their self is even better reason to do what I do best.
