Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Brown.
Hi Kierra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My Journey: From Struggle to Success
My story begins in Perry, Georgia, where I graduated from Perry High School in 2007. Life at home was never easy. My mother struggled with mental health challenges, and after her divorce from my father, we faced some financial hardships. Those early experiences shaped me. I didn’t know it then, but my childhood planted the seeds for the work I’d dedicate my life to by helping others navigate their own mental health journeys.
In 2011, I graduated from Fort Valley State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, finishing with a 3.52 GPA. That same year, I also became a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. But after graduation, life hit hard. It took me almost a year to find work. During that time, I relied on unemployment and government assistance while raising my newborn son. That season of my life was humbling but it built my resilience.
I started my professional journey in 2012 with the Manager in Training program at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, which helped sharpen my leadership skills. By March 2013, I transitioned into social work, taking on the role of Social Services Protect and Placement Specialist with Jones County DFCS. I worked in both CPS Investigations and Family Preservation, and served as a CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) Team Member across multiple counties in Georgia.
I stayed committed to my dream, and in 2015, I earned my Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Fort Valley State University, graduating with a 3.83 GPA. That same year, I began working at Piedmont Counseling Services, Inc., completing assessments and providing therapy to clients from diverse backgrounds.
In January 2016, I joined Atrium Health Medical Center of Central GA as a Mental Health Crisis Worker, conducting emergency psychiatric assessments in the ER. A role I held until May 2020 due to concerns with COVID. By March 2016, I was also working with Georgia Support Services, Inc. as a Support Coordinator, advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities.
In February 2017, I became a Mental Health Therapist at Hephzibah Behavioral Health Services, where I worked with trauma survivors and families in need. That same year, in January 2017, I officially earned my license as an Associate Professional Counselor, marking a major step toward full licensure.
In January 2018, I accepted a leadership role with Middle Flint Behavioral Health Center as Superior Court Coordinator, Intensive Case Management Team Lead, and Interim Community Support Team Lead. I supervised a team of case managers, provided therapy, and coordinated care across 11 counties.
My hard work paid off in September 2018, when I became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). That was a moment I’ll never forget.
From December 2018 to January 2023, I worked as a Behavioral Health First Responder for BHL Mobile Crisis, responding to urgent mental health crises in the community. It was intense, but rewarding work and it taught me how to stay calm in chaos.
In July 2019, I took a leap of faith into entrepreneurship, Brown Professional Counseling & Consultation Services, LLC and co-founding Brown & Scott Integrated Clinical Practice, Inc. Both businesses allowed me to do what I love most to provide therapy, assessments, and support to individuals, couples, and families.
I didn’t stop there. In September 2019, I earned my certification as a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor (CPCS), allowing me to mentor new clinicians entering the field.
In March 2021, I stepped into the spotlight as a TV Clinical Expert for For My Man episodes to provide psychological insight for real stories for a national audience.
By November 2021, I added DUI Instructor to my credentials, and in December 2021, I co-founded Brown & Scott DUI School, which was later honored as Best of Georgia and Best of Warner Robins in 2024.
In October 2024, I was invited to join the Advisory Board for Fort Valley State University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program which was a full-circle moment for me. It’s an absolute honor to give back to the institution that helped launch my career.
Finally, in January 2023, I became a full-time entrepreneur, walking fully in my purpose. Today, I run multiple businesses, supervise other therapists, appear on national television as a mental health expert, and continue advocating for awareness, healing, and hope.
When I look back at my journey, I see more than a career. I see a calling. Every struggle, every setback, every moment of doubt was preparing me for this. And I’m just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been a fight to overcome, a mission to heal, and a calling to rise. I’ve had to climb, fall hard, crawl through heartbreak, rebuild from rock bottom, and climb again. However, every tear, every closed door, every silent prayer, and every comeback has shaped the story that I now tell with pride.
I was raised by my strong resilient mother who battled her own mental health challenges while trying to keep our family afloat after divorcing my father. We didn’t have much because of financial hardships. But her courage, even in brokenness, lit something in me. Watching her endure and survive planted the seed for my life’s work. I didn’t know it then, but I was being prepared to become a voice for the unheard and a healer for the hurting. That’s why I became a Licensed Professional Counselor.
After earning my bachelor’s degree, I found myself unemployed, with a newborn in my arms and nothing but unemployment and government assistance to survive. That season stripped my pride, tested my faith, and forced me to dig deep for strength I didn’t know I had. I had every reason to quit, but I refused to settle. I knew I was built for it.
I went on to hold multiple roles simultaneously in my career all while being a mother and healing my own trauma wounds. I poured into others even when I was empty. I stayed up late writing notes and treatment plans after putting my son to bed, took on underpaid positions, juggled heavy caseloads, and faced burnout because I believed in the mission. I wasn’t chasing titles but I was chasing transformation.
Entrepreneurship wasn’t just a dream I casually stumbled into but it was born from God, grit, and grind.
Brown & Scott Integrated Clinical Practice stands as proof that beauty can come from brokenness. Every lesson, every client, and every door opened is a reminder that I didn’t just survive..I rose.
