Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimora McCord.
Hi Kimora, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I originally started doing my own hair at 7 when I taught myself how to braid on my dolls. That led to me doing my own hair to cut down expenses & allow me to have styles I wanted as a child. It wasn’t until April of my sophomore year of high school when I took more serious.I started StylesWithMora during Covid in 2020-2021 to help financially in my household. I made my prices low regardless of how much labor it took so that people could afford to treat themselves. Times were hard, money was limited for most, so I just wanted to be an outlet to those who just need that pick-me-up. Eventually it bloomed into the business I have now, with my loyal clients that I adore so much. If it wasn’t for them and the countless hours of practice StylesWithMora would be what it is today. I’ve learned so much about running a business & how to properly maintain customer relationships all while being a full time college student. With the help of my support system ie my mom and close friends, I’m able to still be fully booked while not interfering with my school schedule.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, all things have their hiccups and StylesWithMora is no exception. I started my business when the economy was in shambles. People were getting let go from their jobs, losing housing, and didn’t even know what tomorrow would hold, and there I am a 16 year old just trying to put a smile on peoples faces. I had issues with people not taking my time seriously, leading me to have to enforce policies and deposits. There’s times where I value my business over my personal wellbeing and end up burning out. Running any business comes with flaws or even complaints & first starting out I didn’t know how to properly deal with certain situations, leading to me over extending myself to people who just wanted free hairstyles. All in all it’s been a big learning experience that’s I’m grateful to have navigated all while keeping the integrity of StylesWithMora.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
StylesWithMora is a business dedicated to channeling women’s inner celebrity by providing service to enhance one’s natural beauty. The goal is to make each person that leaves my chair feel like the star of their own show. I offer versatility within styles such as knotless braids, stitch braids, wig installs, quick weaves, sew-ins & natural braid styling. Being versatile has set me apart from other businesses and allows me to not have a slow season. I’m most proud of my clients brand wise. They represent not only my work but who I am & what I would to be known for. Their loyalty and trust is more than I can ask for. I would love for readers to know StylesWithMora values you beyond a hairstyle. I connect with clients on a personal level and thus is a safe space to be authentically you.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Without risk there is no reward. People take risks everyday and don’t know it. Personally I’m not afraid of risks thanks to my ENI professor Mr. Sundaresan who believes people are not afraid of risks but failure. Failure doesn’t mean to give up it’s all apart of the process. If you don’t fail then you’re not really trying, so if you don’t take risks you must be comfortable in the place you are. I love to think the world evolves everyday, either adapt or be left behind.
